Cake Boss stays on because it is a scripted soap opera. It will remain for a long time.
The other shows were showcases of numerous and varied decorators designing and decorating spectacular high end cakes.
I miss those shows as they showed technique, design and color points, and the process of decorating.
AWe get the foodnetwork in the uk and I love the cake girls merci beau coup cakes etc (except that guy with the goatee who does cartoon stuff where it's more about engineering than cake) My idol is ron been israel but I've never seen him on. (Having a hard time working caps on this comp....sorry)

I can understand that. Food-as-entertainment depends on the fire, the sizzle, the theatrics. Pastry chefs, and bakers are considered the neurosurgeons of the culinary world. To a general audience, watching somebody painstakingly design, say, a gumpaste topper is the equivalent to watching paint dry. Ergo, there's no money in it.
OTOH Cupcake Wars is successful because 1) it's cupcakes, which are quick to make, which means 2) the action moves right along. Because it's quick, they can't spend a whole lot of time on the painstaking elements like the fondant toppers. The final two essentially bang out their cupcakes in a way that's not much different from how I've banged out product. I often wonder how the cupcakes taste, given the time restraints.
Just can't get excited by cupcakes, sorry, they are the buttonholes (corsage) of cakes. I know some people will drive miles to get to these little things from experts but they say teatime or kiddie party or even worse....drunk women at hen nights (bachelorette party)
I can just about forgive the "baby shower" thing. It hasn't really caught on so much across "the pond",
I think we are still a little superstitious about welcoming a baby until its safe arrival, plus supermarkets cant churn out enough so who can compete with £1.00 for 4?

I do love it though....I get in every day from work and have a cuppa before I start dinner. I just love the scale of the things they do. We don't really have anything like it here except Choccywoccydoodah and that's been absent for a while - it's very similar.

I do agree with you Cakebaby2 to an extent - I much prefer a proper big cake! However, it seems that this is what people want and I have to get with the programme somewhat. I did some for Mother's day and I found them to be quite finicky - I have no idea how people can do them so cheaply but from what I saw in Brighton a couple of weeks ago, they sell for around £2.50-£3.50 per piece and not that intricate. Maybe I need to get with the programme.
