I have been asked to make this cake, but by looking at it I am puzzled on the bottom tier design, is it a stencil or some type of cut outs? I am not sure what to do. I really would appreciate some help. Thanks

Stencil, I'm sure. Possibly two separate ones used.

Nope, too thick to be a stencil.  They were probably cut out using a Silhouette or Cricut.

It's a stencil. Blow up the picture. You can see smudging and areas on on the edges from peeling it back. My stenciling is very thick if I'm not careful.

Well I'll be darned, she's right.  Never seen stencils that thick before.  Thanks for the education.  Learn something new every day.

It's this stencil from designer stencils I think: http://www.designerstencils.com/Chic-Rose-Mat-P12524C49_SKU_C318.aspx

Go to youtube and search for stenciling, there are a lot of good videos on it!

Get a stencil and practice on a cake or a cake pan.  Have a small wet paintbrush to clean up any small smudges.

If using more than one stencil, be sure to let each section of your design dry, before you add to the design or have an adjoining section, so you don't smear it.

I use royal icing when I stencil on fondant and I like my royal icing a little thick.

You can put a little Crisco on the back of the stencil to help it adhere to the fondant.  And always wash the stencil and dry it completely, if you are repeating a design.

I pin or tape my stencil on the cake and carefully work on section at a time.   That is the hardest part.

I apply the icing with a small plastic scraper that you can get at a paint supply or hardware store.  Then I use a different clean plastic scraper and carefully scrape away any excess icing.

Next I take the pins out or the tape off and lift the stencil very slowly.  You can learn a lot from practice.  You can then pipe the royal icing with a small tip to touch up, where you need to.  Don't be afraid to try it.  It is actually fun!  And it will look great!  Practice!

Or you could cheat a little and pipe over an edible image damask print out. Just print out and pipe over it in the color you need.

I personally have not done this but it would be easier than to use a stencil if you can't get the hang of it.

This is pretty much the answer right here. It's the easiest decorating method there is, once you watch how it's done.

I'm not a stencil fan but Marvelous Molds came out with a quick and effective way to do damask  just write this address on the browser.     www.marvelousmolds.com/onlays  I have not tried the product yet but I trust Chef with anything he comes up with he is just genius!
