this was my first time ever working with fondant. I decided to make this 4" square cake so I wouldn't waste a ton of stuff if it went bad. I made MMF. There were a LOT of things that I did that I'm sure other bakers don't do but I really had to work with what I had.
The cake was a bit lopsided because I didn't level it very well. I have since found some good leveling tips, but honestly it was just for practice and to get the feel of fondant. I made these twirly things by wrapping strips on sticks, and cut out dots and stars of different sizes. My daughter thought it was a nice effort although she pointed out that it's crooked (lopsided haha)
BUT I must say I loved the whole process of this, and I'm looking forward to doing this again! my kids both have the cakes they want in mind for their birthdays lol thankfully I have until November to practice!
Before I put on the final touches
DONE! =)
AWell done. Keep working with it and you will get more ideas on what to do with the fondant. :)
Adorable. Careful...cake decorating is addictive and before you know it...well, you won't be able to stop and will be like some of us and buy EVERYTHING. LOL It's such fun!
Thanks for all of your responses! I'm already thinking about the next cake i want to make, uh oh I may be in trouble haha.
I've been looking at stuff online for days, I definitely want to buy some of the basics like a fondant mat, roller and smoother .. but I'm having fun in the meantime with my meager supplies :)
Ah you done a fab job!! well done :)
I'm yet to work with MMF lol not even made it yet haha
ANice work! I recently did my first fondant cake and I haven't been able to stop since then!
AAh the first fondant cake! We all have one! You did a great job. It will be so interesting for you to go back and look at your first cake once you've made a dozen or so. You will really see your progress. I am on my 12th fondant cake or so and it is amazing to see how every cake gets a little better. One thing I can suggest to you to bring your next cake to the next level is to put it on a cake drum and decorate it to be an extension of your cake. Cover it with fondant or decorative contact paper and glue ribbon trim around the edges. It makes a world of difference in your presentation. If your first cake would've been on one instead of a plate I would think it came from a fancy bakery! Good luck to you in your cake journey... Can't wait to see your skills!
