The pen is probably fine, lots of people keep them in pens. Our chickens free range, but we don't have that many predators to worry about, so we can get away with it here.
Maybe the bad eggs you got were just a fluke and the rest were ok? Maybe she saved them up for too long to get all the family members 4 or 5 dozen? We've have never had eggs go bad, but that could be because our eggs are all fertile, so we refrigerate them right away to prevent the topic of this discussion. I have found a clutch of eggs that the chickens hid outside the nest boxes that were rather old and many were just air inside as everything evaporated. We opened some and they were pretty unappetizing. Give Granny's eggs a try again, maybe they're not so bad after all.
AAnd we are talking storing them for months and months that way.

I buy store bought eggs all the time (I live in the city) & although it happens rarely I occasionally come across a blood spot & then throw out the egg bc I'm Jewish.
I have a garden but don't think my neighbours would be happy if I started keeping chickens although it was funny bc when we moved here from a 5th floor apartment my eldest son (7 at the time) looked out the window to the garden and said wistfully "what a shame I'm allergic to animals - (he's allergic to cats and dogs) - otherwise we could have bought a cow"!

I could say a lot of sarcastic things here, but my guess is that as soon as I use sarcasm and the word Jew, I'll get blasted before anyone reads the end of my post, which is, I am Jewish. Obviously I don't keep kosher, but I am a Jew nonetheless. So unless I have figured out a way to be an anti-Semitic Jew, you can pretty much see how ludicrous the defamation has been here.

Farmer John & Enga I did not take it badly or write what I wrote seriously. I'm so used to stuff like this - talking of eggs I've had some thrown at me with sale Juif (dirty Jew) screamed alongside, this when I've been out with my husband (he looks very Jewish, kips, hat and all) so I'm not crying into my tea over this. IMO ignorance is the cause of most anti semitism anyway.
Farmer John, your comment about the fact that you are Jewish means you can't be anti semitic made me laugh - some of the biggest anti semites are Jewish! And no, this does not refer to you as you clearly state you are not I'm just making a point.

For goodness sake, nobody was calling you an anti-semite, we were using circumstances to point out that the use of the words ignorant and out of touch were not as appropriate as you made them out to be.

No it doesn't make you ignorant, it means that you follow the Kashrut/Jewish food law.

It was just a point that the 'out of touch' rant does not apply to everyone, it, and the posts by others that followed it, inferred that everyone throwing out bloody eggs are ridiculous, etc. That rubbed me the wrong way, obviously.

Enga, I apologise if I've offended you, I seriously did not mean to. And of course on CC we are not used to Anti Semitism - that's not what I said. I'm more used to it in every day life (depending on what's going on in the Middle East usually). CC is a neutral ground thankfully. I was not (and I don't think anyone else was) suggesting that you don't eat clean food.

NO I didn't! Your assumptions are defensive. I brought out the fact that some religions do not allow blood spots as well as not all people have access to free range eggs. I do not care what your religion is. I was providing additional information that was not previously there. Your insinuations are uncalled for.

Farmer John, regardless of your intentions, that one post really was a bit condescending. Must always use caution when using words with negative connotations. Sure the definition seems innocent, but you know the emotion that word can elicit.
I'll also go a step further and say that if someone had used similar language toward a new member regarding some controversial topics, they'd be called mean.
I'm sure that no one meant to ruffle the chicken's feathers. Now, they are.
I'm sure we would all welcome knowledge about the ingredients we use.

On another line on eggs - I usually use large eggs but yesterday the store was out of them so I bought the smaller size, there is a difference ( I can tell when measuring) so I added an extra one to make it up, have any of you any experience in egg sizes?

I agree and thank you! Because of egg sizes, I try to measure them because they can vary. Not knowing how the size categories work in that industry, I find it safer to measure. It gets tricky when a recipe just calls for 2 eggs. I generally use Xlarge if I can find them.
I always weigh mine, I've worked all my recipes out in grams. Keeps everything consistent and dependable.
Ugh, I thought that by adding an extra egg it would work out the same but I can tell the recipe is off slightly. Still tastes good but it just doesn't 'look' right. Will have to scour the shops tomorrow for my regular size; then weigh them as previously suggested so that I'll know for future.

I buy what the store has to offer or I starve to death. Literally. Along with everyone else in town.
And I always use Large Eggs unless the recipe says otherwise.
For some of the large recipes with egg Whites it's easier to measure or weigh then to count egg shells in the trash can.
I believe most recipes are based on large eggs, and that is what I buy also, but for most recipes just weigh out the whites or yolks.
