Simple Yellow Cake

I found this recipe on the internet a few years ago and have been using it every since. It makes very dense, very moist cake.

Simple Yellow Cake


  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla (also tastes great using other flavorings)
  • 2 3/4 c. flour
  • 3 tsp. baking pwd.
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 3/4 c. milk (skim, whole, doesn’t matter)


  1. Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour pan(s) or spray with baking spray. Cream together shortening and sugar, then add eggs and vanilla. In separate bowl mix dry ingredients. Alternate adding the milk and flour to the shortening mixture in 3 parts. Pour in pan(s) and bake 40-45 mins.
  2. Use either a 9×13, 2 8″ or 2 9″ pans. If making a 2 layer 10″, make a recipe and a half.

Used this for a cake that required a little carving, it worked great and I can't wait to try it again on a more complicated cake!
