Old fashioned chocolate cake 2


  • for the cake:
  • 200g plain flour
  • 200g caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 40g cocoa powder
  • 175g butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons real vanilla extract
  • 150ml sour cream
  • for the icing

  • 75g butter
  • 175g dark chocolate
  • 300g icing sugar
  • 1 tablespoon golden syrup
  • 125ml sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • sugar flowers to decorate (optional)


  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees centegrade. grease and line 2x 20cm/ 8inch tins.
  2. Mix flour, sugar and leavening agents in a large bowl and beat in the butter. Whisk in cocoa, sour cream, vanilla and eggs. Beat mixture together and bake for 35 mins.
  3. For the icing:
  4. Melt butter and chocolate carefully and slowly in microwave.(or over pot of boiling water) meanwhile, sieve icing sugar, add golden syrup to chocolate mixture followed by sour cream and vanilla. add icing sugar. mix together and when cakes are cooled, sandwich together and cover entire cake with the remainder of the icing. decorate as desired
