Chocolate Malt Cake

My husband is a huge fan of chocolate malt drinks. I saw this in a magazine. It was a huge hit at our Thanksgiving party. I got so many compliments and my husband says this is his all time favorite cake.


  • 1 box mix dark chocolate cake.
  • 1 1/2 cups water. (I used a cake of cold coffee and 1/2 cup of water)
  • 3 eggs.
  • 1/3 cup oil.
  • 1 cup malt powder.
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups unsalted butter softened
  • 2 cups confectioners sugar.
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Garnish with whoppers.


  1. Preheat oven to 350. Spray 2 9″ pans with non stick baking spray.
    Make chocolate cake according to box directions. Bake until done and leave to cool.
    In a large bowl, beat malt powder and cream at medium speed till smooth. Add butter, beating till creamy, add powdered sugar and vanilla till well combined and smooth.
    Spread between cake layers and over top and sides.
    Garnish with whoppers.

Malt Powder? Is that the same stuff used to make Malted Milk found usually next to the chocolate milk mixes or is this something else? This recipe sounds delicious.


It's the stuff you find in the grocery store to make drinks. I found it next to the hot chocolate/tea.


The package says Malted Milk Original by Carnation. I think I used a DH dark fudge cake. I hope this helps.


oh, by the way... I have a typo in the recipe. It should read I used 1 up of cold coffee. I have cake on the brain..LOL
