Whimsical Topsy Turvy Cake

Whimsical Topsy Turvy Cake on Cake Central

Thank you for viewing my picture. This is a whimsical topsy turvy wedding cake (I have to give credit to Colette Peters for coming up with such great technique back in 1985). I used 11 techniques and has been one of the most memorable cakes I've made since I had lots of fun and enjoyed the challenge :-).

Thank you so much SkisinOkinawa...I loved designing and making this cake...it took quite some time to accomplish but I loved the challenge. Thank you so much for your e-mail. I can say the same thing about all the wonderful cakes that were submited for this competition...I think everyone did a wonderful job and I have lots to learn from every cake posted. :-)

Thank you for your e-mail Chantel134. I loved making this cake. I just did it again this past weekend and will be doing another version of it for a wedding coming up this Saturday.

Thank you toristreats and imartsy for viewing my picture and for your e-mails. Ever since I did this cake I've come up with similar design but incorporated fresh flowers in between tiers, and also hand painted hearts instead of flowers on the first tier.

ewpatrick I apologize for the late reponse. I used #13 if I am not mistaken (royal icing) painted with pearl luster dust.

THIS is my goal as a cake decorator. I just finished my first two cakes and posted photos of them. If I can do a cake just like this, just as clean, just as fun....then I'll consider myself a success. How long did this take you, from start to finish? I still don't really have a true concept of the steps involved in something this detailed. The only way I'm learning is from books, free videos and websites!

Dear Kerrixx1. I bake all of my cakes fresh and decorate them fresh too with exception of the bows which I did a few days in advance. Because everything else is done to take the shape of the cake as it is drying it took between 19 to 22 hours to decorate starting the day before the wedding and ending that noon before the wedding. I had done it a few times before so it was not as hard as the first time as you get use to the steps. Never give up I've learned mostly with books just like you. Keep it u...

Dear itsasweetthing and angelas2babies thank you for your comments. You guys are making me blush :-). I will be working on another topsy turvy this week but with pastel colors. Thank you for your kind words. Keep up the great baking!

Karenichi, I hope you will post your other cake creations. This is one of my most favorite cakes on the whole cc site.

Wow. This is such a beautiful creation! I'm so happy for you, and your expertise. You could be on the food network (if you've not been before). I would love to learn to do a cake like this. For the top most layer, did you use some type of fondant pattern-maker, and then paint the flowers and dots with pearl dust? It's exceptional.

Easy to see why this won the contest; what a beauty! I feel part of the success is in the fact that your angles aren't too severe, so it still looks traditional yet contemporary. You have a great eye for design. Lovely work!

I must say this cake is stunning. I'm usually not a big fan of TT, but this one takes the cake (no pun intended)!
