Here is a picture of a 1/2 sheet cake that I did for my Grandmother's 80th birthday. I used the buttercream frosting. I had made my flowers all up ahead of time using the royal frosting so that the flowers were hard & easier to work with in positioning them in the cake. I did a basketweave for the vase extending down to the border. I put a mound of frosting underneath the center of my flowers to give them a 3d look.
