My First Try At Fondant
This is my first cake decorated with fondant. I made this for my friend's coffee shop's 1st birthday. It's a 4-layer basic sponge cake with chocolate ganache frosting. I only used fondant to cover around the side of the cake, because since I needed the top part to be brown (to look like coffee), I just left it bare and let the chocolate ganache show.
I don't know if you can tell, because my shaping was clumsy, but there's a little guy with big belly on top of the cake. The design concept here is that the little guy with the big belly (their coffee shop's character) is floating in a cup of coffee.
For the fondant, I used Satin Ice white rolled fondant (after I tried to make my own rolled fondant and failed miserably). It was pliable and very easy to work with, even for a novice like me. The only problem was that I didn't have the patience to carefully roll the fondant out to even thickness throughout, so the fondant cover on the side of the cake was not smooth all the way. It looked bumpy at a few places and there was a little bit of elephant skin. As for the long strands at the top and bottom of the cake, there was a little bit of drying and cracking, I guess it was because I used too much corn starch when working with them.
It took me 2 days to put this cake together. Phew! I just delievered this cake to my friend's coffee shop today. Now I'm waiting anxiously to hear their comments and feedbacks.
