Volcano

I was asked if I could make a Cake that looked like a volcano and was covered with chocolate that her son could smash, so this is what I came up with. The little boy told his mum that this was the best cake he had ever had. So that was enough for me to think I did a pretty good job. The board I covered with blue contact to resemble water. Then placed fondant on the board which I then painted with food colouring. Then I made a chocolate cake which made in a Dolly Varden Cake Pan, then sliced the cake and filled each later with chocolate buttercream and covering the cake with this too. Then I placed tiny M & M's all over the cake. I then had to create the chocolate shell to cover the cake, created large rocks around the outside of the chocolate shell. Then I piped royal icing at the top of my volcano to represent the larva and placed some more M & M's just at the top, hoping that once the royal icing dried and the child smashed the shell the would roll down or spill out over the board. As I was running out of time, I just bought some dinosaurs and attached them to the board with royal icing. I hope this cake gives other Cake Central members some inspiration.
