Red Sox/baseball Cake
A woman who had seen my cakes at local parties called in a panic and asked if I could make a baseball cake for her husband's birthday (which was 2 days later). She told me to make a flat (2-dimensional) ball to make it easier, but I just couldn't justify what I was charging for a simple/flat cake. So this is what I came up with. It was my first time using the 'ball' pan but it worked out OK. I did cut and fill it, since I think it's important that cakes taste good and not just look good (and who likes a big mouthful of dry cake with no icing). Of course doing this make it harder to work with, and make it a bit more stressful for me (since I was worried it would sink or droop b/c of all the buttercream). I also hadn't really thought out the design that well and was just working with what I had on hand (which was a lot white fondant I had made a week prior for another cake). So, when I went to put the whole thing together I realized there was so much white, which is why I came up with that green 'grass' divider area. Looking back I probably would have done something different like a mitt instead of a jersey, because I prefer more color to my cakes.
