I was given a picture of a darling pair of cowgirl boots as inspiration for the cake. The bottom tier mimics the leather and pattern of the bottom of the boots. And the inset red hearts and stitching on the top tier is similar to the top of the boots. This was for a little girl who loves horses, so a fondant horse seemed like a perfect topper.
