its nice, I'd leave the border off though, it looks more elegant without a border. If the bride wants a border though, then i'd cater to the bride. Very nice for first cake though, i'm envious

I love it... Very elegant! The only thing I'd suggest is that you use cake boards that are the same size as the cake -- that way they don't show. Also, if you put the cake on a stronger board (I glue 2 or 3 cardboard circles together) the icing won't crack. Very nice.

Hi Lori.....the cake is just about perfect. The frosting looks beautiful along with the piping. The cake part is perfect; the layers look even. The only thing that bugs me about the cake is that the columns are showing. I know that is maybe my own pet peeve (it may not bother other people), but I just think that if you could find a creative way to camouflage them with flowers, ribbons, or more snow flakes, it would make this cake stunning. You could fill in the gaps with tons of royal icing snowflakes

You did a fantastic job! I like the border! In fact, I prefer a border--I guess it's just a personal preference, it seems to be the trendy thing to not have borders. While I love simplicity, I think the border gives a more finished look to the cake. I would try to cut down the cake boards or get some the same size as the cakes for a flawless look. What are you going to do with all that practice cake?!!!

You did such a beautiful job!!! Would there be anything going on the top of the cake at all? If not, what about adding some royal snowflakes on white floral wire coming up off the top incorporated with some silver ribbon (different sizes and heights)? Just a thought.

I have a bride & groom to go on the top of the cake. So I CAN use cake boards that are the same size as the cake and I would still have enough room on the round edges to do the ball border? I tried using the clear 7" push pillars but it wasn't sturdy enough on the bottom layer and the middle cake leaned....so I played it safe and went with the bigger white push pillars. Actually the whole cake is GONE already!! I brought it into work and the employees ate the bottom cake, my husband had a luncheo...

Since you are using cake plates the cake boards should be the same size as the cake itself. Then you wouldnt see the cake boards. I also think the borders look nice too. I like using borders on cakes. What about the using all crystal look plates and crystal spiked pillars for support. They are slim and not overbearing. I wouldnt trasport it with the pillars though, just assemble there and there shouldnt be a problem. All in all the cake looks great too. I wish that I would have did a practice...

I like the border too. When using cake board you should use the same size plate as your cake and then I add my border once I get the cake onto the plate. This hides any finger smudges when picking it up and putting it on the plate. The cake is very nice, and I think that the best advice that you will get will come from yourself with this practice run and from this experience. Good luck. I do think that more snowflakes would be pretty if appropriate and that was the theme that they were going for.

How come I was told in cake class to always use boards 2" larger than the size of the cake? Was anyone else told that? Thank you everyone for the feedback...I really do appreciate it!!

I love your cake! I don't remember hearing anything in class about the boards needing to be 2" bigger. Have you tried making royal icing snowflakes? they are so easy& fun. They may add a personal touch instead of the ones you have on the cake now (but those are pretty too) You can also make smaller ones & add luster then glue/royal to the pilars! One of the mbrs on this site had sent me the template that they use and I tried on some of my cakes and they look beautiful! PM me if you want the template.

That is so weird, all along i've been using boards 2" bigger...was told that in class. I'M SO THANKFUL FOR THIS WEB SITE!!!! The bride actually gave me those ornaments to use on the cake, so I better stick with what she wants :)

I only remember my instructor talking about a 2" difference when it came to the seperator plates on columned tiers. For our final Class III cake we used 10" and 8" seperator plates. As for your cake board, if you put the cake on a board ON A SEPERATOR PLATE or other base, you wouldn't want the cake board showing. Your borders would actually go on the seperator plate or base that you use. I think that's right.
