I need help making a base for a wedding cake due Jan 6. The cake itself will have ice blue scrolls and bead border, and silver dragees as accents. It is only a 3 tier stacked cake (14", 10", 6") so I want to use something that will give the cake some height.

I thought of using an 18" cake dummy and covering it with something, but not sure what. I think it would be too difficult to use fancy foil and not show creases.

Any other ideas would be great. I've only made one other wedding cake and it was tall enough that I just used a masonite board covered in fancy foil.

Bride can't afford a silver base, and I"m not ready to invest in one to use for possible future cakes.

Thanks!

Can you use the dummy and decorate it the same as the rest of the cake. What are you covering the cake with? Fondant or buttercream?
You could use the same thing on the dummy and then just use the masonite as your base.

Just a thought.

I would take the 18" dummy and cover it with matching ice blue royal fondant. But I would consider going with a 2" dummy instead of a 4", otherwise it will look like another tier, instead of a cake stand.

Reverse the decorations. Make a matching ice blue fondant pearls and paint the stand with silver scrolls.

Can the bride afford to rent a silver base? That's usually a way more affordable option.

I remember quite a while back someone on here used those clear blocks like you can get at Home Depot and put lights in the middle and it was really pretty. If I saved a pic, I'll post it.

That does sound pretty dodibug. Let me know if you find the pic!

I guess I should have mentioned that the bride isn't really paying me for this cake. Even though it was back in Feb and I've made a lot of cakes since then, she was technically my first order and willing to let me do her wedding cake. She's paying for the ingredients, but the rest is her wedding gift. So the easier the better too lol

I just used the lighted blocks this last weekend for a wedding cake. The blocks were at Lowe's for 4.78 each and I got the white lights with white cord (20 lights) for 99 cents a set at Hobby Lobby. Check my photo gallery Wedding Cakes The Trilogy Wedding Cake No. 1 and All Lit Up.
Easy to do! Let me know if you have any questions.

This might help:

I know there was also a fabric covered cake stand that looked liked a giant pincushion; but I think that would be expensive to make.

I love the idea of the blocks! I hope the bride does too. That's definitely something inexpensive I could reuse!

Thanks!!!

That is such a good idea! I made some of those for Christmas gifts, you drill the hole in the clear block, and push in the lights and wrap them with a pretty christmas bow and they look like presents. I never thought about using them as a stand. You guys rock!!

AAAWWWH Dodibug your so sweet!

I have used the glass blocks both as a base and covered with fabric so you couldn't see them. They are very cheep and sturdy. PM me if you have any questions.

No NEW-you're sweet! heehee!

I have to apologize though-I went back and looked at my response and I really should have said you have some GREAT examples in your pics since they are really pretty cakes and set-ups! I like the one with the (it looks like) sheer material covering the lit up blocks!
