Wow! These things are expensive. I need a 16/18 inch square silver plateau for the wedding cake I'm doing in August. While my first impression is to just buy one, my husband wanted me to ask if anyone has ever faked it and if so, how. The plateau will NOT come into contact with real cake, all the layers on it will be styrofoam.

why don't you silver-leaf a pre-made wooden wall fixture from the craft store? It would look just the same, but cost hardly anything. Even silver spray paint would work!

I caved yesterday and bought an 18" one online for about $140 with shipping and duty...but it was actually under $100 for US residents and free shipping! The website is in Ohio and it's

http://www.weddingcakestands.com/homeplateau.htm

He offers lots of sizes and is much less expensive than other places I've seen online...because the stands are non-tarnishing nickel instead of solid silver.

Here's a photo of the one I ordered:

I just bought a beautiful 14 inch square from Monogrammedgifts.com. I am very happy with it. I paid only $77 for it. It was the cheapest I could find on line. I just went to the website and it's gone up to $85. But it's free shipping. An 18 inch is $115. I have a pic of the one that I bought.

I know it's a big investment, but I have my brides rent mine when they use it for a wedding. They pay a deposit (price of the stand) plus $25.00. Then it's their responsibility to get someone to return it back to me the Monday after the wedding. When it's returned (undamaged) they recieve their deposit back.

I just tell the bride to rent one and I pick it up from them the day before. I could probably make a lot of money renting them out myself but I don't want to deal with the nightmare of trying to get it back.
