This morning I was looking at fellow CCer's websites. I came across a site that has some misspelled words. It is obvious that this person is using their site to promote his/her cake business. I immediately began to send a pm to this member, but I stopped myself. He/she never solicited me or anyone else to spell check his or her site and I don't want to come off as though I'm nitpicking. Also, sometimes words lose their compassion via email and I don't want to say something that may appear to be callus. What would you suggest?
Did he/she post asking for opinions on or about the site? I know when I set my site up I had done so an people would tell me about spelling and grammar mistakes. Emails, & PM's are hard to read in the right manner, they never sound they way the person wants them too. If this person asked for opinions about the site than yes I would, if they didnt than maybe think about your wording and still let them know about it.
Hi Kylesmom, I don't know what I'd do in a case like that either, but it really can't be making a very good impression for the website to have misspelled words. (I know it turns me off to see that.)
You are so right about how it might be taken, but it is quite possible that someone nicely pointing out the mistakes would be appreciated. Maybe reading some of the posts this member has written would give you an idea how they would react. Janice
Hi Kylesmom,
English is not my first lenguage, All my posts are full of mistakes
, but I love practicing my english...
I would apreciate so much any imput on my web site, It's so important, and besides it's not like you are correcting her cake desings, but spelling is an honest mistake anyone can make,
Paola
Hi paolacaracas ~ I just went to your site since you said you want any help from others with spelling, etc.
I totally cracked up laughing!! LOL Not at your site, but at me not realizing it wouldn't be in English!!!
As for giving help when not solicited . . . I think I would leave it alone.
Hello fellow CCers!! ![]()
This predicament is a tough one. I know that if I had a business-based website, I would want it to look professional in every aspect. I would be grateful if someone were to let me know if they noticed any error(s). However, that whole âhow do you say itâ thing is really challenging. Iâm at a loss for words here. ![]()
How about you say something like.
---While I was browsing through your gallery of lovely cakes, I noticed that there are XX words that were inadvertantly mistyped. As a fellow business person I know that you are working diligently to create an informative and elegant website. With respect to our common interests, I wanted to let you know about these omissions. You will find the words I am talking about here......... and here......... Again your work is wonderful and I appreciate the opportunity to interact with you on CC.
Sincerely, XXX
How's that? And I personally would want to know. Was it my site? ![]()
Good luck, Julia
¡Ay, Mira, Paola! ¡Acabo de mirar su Web site! ¡Sus tortas son tan hermosas! ¡Incluso si usted tiene algunas palabras deletrearon mal, las tortas son tan bonitas que nadie notará siempre!
(Hey, Paola! I just looked at your website! Your cakes are so beautiful! Even if you do have some words spelled wrong, the cakes are so pretty that nobody will ever notice!)
Theresa ![]()
This is a tough one! I personally wouldn't do it because I would be afraid she/he might take it the wrong way.
In any case, if you do decide to pm the person...double check the corrections too.
Good Luck with this. And from the bottom of my heart, it's so nice to see some people that genuinely care for the well being of other people's businesses! More power to you! ![]()
I am always one who thinks "if it were me, I'd want to know". I know not everyone would take it that way. I would, however, send them a pm--throwing in apologies thoughout if they didn't want the feedback--insisting that you only have the best intentions in mind, adding things like: please don't take this the wrong way, or be offended, etc.
that's just me, though. I understand other people feel like myob is much better if advice is not solicited.
Now for the real question: IS IT MY SITE??????????????????? CUZ I DO WANT TO KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
This really is a tough one, but I would definitely say something. What's important is to remain tactful and explain that you want to help, not criticize. Its delicate but because your intentions are good I think you'll be okay.
My husband and I own a lobster import/export business. When our website first went up I sent out the link to all our friends. Within a day, one of my friends had emailed me with a word document showing all the errors plus corrections that needed to be made. WE did not ask them to view our website for errors, but, we were pleased to have this information because as someone said in a previous post, mispelled words and grammatical errors on your website can have a negative impact on you and your biz.

Thank you Theresa, your cakes are beautiful too, I'm Stilling the graduation idea for my son in 4 years ![]()
Do it. Don't be afraid of offending someone with your kindness. Likelihood is, they won't be offended - they'll be grateful. And if they're not grateful they'll still fix the errors & they'll get over it and you'll still have been a wonderful, helpful person.
Rachel
You might want to check and make sure that they are from the same country as you. I PM'd someone once that I had found a misspelled word on their website but it wasn't misspelled - that was the way it was spelled there! Luckily they didn't take it to heart!
Debbie
My website will be up and running in two weeks and I had someone write me about a month ago telling me it wasn't working (not realizing I hadn't launched it yet!) I didn't mind a bit. ![]()
I think the way acookieobsession worded it is great, I don't think anyone could take offense, especially if you make it clear that you mean no offense and only want to help. I, for one, would be very thankful to have any mistakes pointed out so I could correct them and present my best to the customer. As someone pointed out, all us CCers are here to help one another!

Too funny! ![]()
I like acookieobsession's response. ![]()
I think I would've left it alone. Had I said something, it would've been without even thinking how it may have sounded and would've come out seeming heartless....something like..."hey, does the site builder you use not have spell check?"
It wouldn't have meant to be mean but it would've come out somewhat that way.
I say go for it!
I had someone who I consider a friend here at CC mention to me that there was a misspelled word on one of my webpages and I didn't mind at all I was very thankful they found it! After doing all the coding I've done to the website and looking at all that HTML for so long the words and letters just blend together and it wasn't that bad of a mistake lol but I was greatful a fellow CC'er brought it to my attention. ![]()
Now.... was it mine?!!?!?! Is there another mistake I need to fix???? lol I say give me the webbie address and persons name in PM and I'll notify them
lol
Also sometimes builders don't come with spell check and if they do it's probably hard to find. I don't even know if mine does but if it's a word I don't really know how to spell I'll type it into Word and spell check it there ![]()
I think you should tell them. I think that is why most of us are here at CC- to be helped, educated and encouraged! Maybe you could just say "I think I noticed a few things- would you want to know what I noticed?" instead of just listing them in the original email.
Okay...I am off to double check my site and see if I get any PM's about it today! ![]()
I am one of those people that would want to be told if I have toilet paper stuck to my shoe; something on my shirt; a piece of spinach between my two front teeth; said the wrong thing at the wrong time; or, that, my website had some typos!
You can PM the member, ask her if she is one of those people, giving her the option of listening to you or not!
I think that you should tactfully point out the errors. Sometimes when people spend so much time on a project/article, they don't even see their own mistakes. I used to write alot for my job and a second person or fresh eye really helped to improve the product.
Being the Election's Specialist for my county, one of my jobs is to put together the sample ballots, pamphlets and actual ballots for all elections.
We literally call in a proofing staff to read, re-read, then switch off, and read AGAIN! Before printing ANYTHING! And this is, mind you, after my personal staff has proofed what I have done!
I believe in all aspects of life, it is vitally important to get the proper verbage and spelling down pact. If we wanna goof off (as I LOVE to do here at CC, then fine!), but from a professional standpoint, the website owner NEEDS TO BE TACTFULLY TOLD OF SAID ERRORS!!!
What's even funnier to me is that the person might read this thread, then get your eloquently worded email.
ALWAYS tell people that have a website if they have words that aren't spelled right on it. Save them the future embarrassment of a client that is looking at their site and pointing it out.
You don't have to send a formal sounding email. Just be polite and sound sincere.
I would want to know!!
Angie

That sounds nice to me. I guess I'm just nervous because of the number of members who said to say nothing. ![]()
I don't blame you for being nervous. I guess you have to ask yourself: would you rather someone be upset with you for mentioning it, or would you rather not point it out to someone who might really have wanted to know? Darned if you do, darned if you don't. Will it bother you if you say nothing? I know if it were my website (and I know it's not, since I don't have one) I would be very embarrassed if a customer were the one to notice it. Plus the customers this person might lose because of it.
Also, can you really imagine trying to help someone correct errors, and them saying "Mind your own business, I wanted those mistakes!" I hope no one would have that attitude! Even if they were upset, they would still make the corrections...
As a caring person, in general, it is very important to tactfully inform that person they made a boo boo!!
