Replicate Textured Buttercream

As simple as this may look lol , how would one go about trying to replicate this vertically combed buttercream look? Also do you think the dress is made using buttercream and a piping tip?
on the cake itself, on the blue part -- you could get that look with a cake comb or even a fork -- just keep brushing it up and cleaning off the comb or fork -- but not too clean -- then the skirt could be done with a wide flat rose tube
Yes K8 I also thought the same thing Looking at the right side of the top tier especially I noticed what looks like “crumbs” on the lines One wouldn’t get that w/piping But I *never* would be able to make such straight lines even w/Using a comb:) Also the top edges are soooo clean— no sign of having pulled a comb up through b’cream
I didn’t think about using a fork but I did think about Using a comb! Should it be done on freshly iced cake or on crusted bc?
I would practice on both Find what works best for you I’m thinking fresh might be best but those tiny knobs /crumbs make me think crusted
Ok, here's my two cents....the vertical lines appear to me to have been done with something small and rounded, like the end of an artist paint brush or a small ball tool, maybe even a couple of sizes ball tool. It would be necessary to use a bench scraper or something similar as a guide to insure straight lines. Honestly, I can't tell if the skirt is buttercream or fondant. I sure as heck couldn't do it in buttercream!
How would you go about creating the skirt? ...i was thinking maybe a buttercream transfer but.idk lol
sweetdreamzz, the skirt appears to be made of fondant, applied in strips and shaped for movement.
I sent a picture of the cake, that sweetdreamzz posted, to melissa on mycakeschool dot com because I found a very similar cake in a tutorial she has on there -- this is what she said:
Thanks, Kate! That is some sweet piping! I am totally in awe of all of you who do magic with a piping bag!
For the combed buttercream look, you can also use a straight edge like a bench scraper and just push it into the buttercream. Time consuming, but it looks cool. I've done it that way and also with just a palette knife that has a pointed end to it.
Omg Thank you ladies ! That awesome. I too tried to recreate this cake using buttercream. The colors were requested to be changed to rose gold and champagne . They requested rhinestones for the too if the dress and I couldn't find any so I made candy and broke it up for the top.
I agree, the crushed candy was a brilliant idea, far superior to rhinestones! Beautiful cake and you nailed the colors.
