Drawn, Edible Image Or What?

I have a request for a cake that is basically a round buttercream cake with a lady who has an afro. It looks like an outline of a ladies face, her head is slightly to the side and part of her shoulder is shown. Her hair is made with frosting using the tip that makes a star type of style into an afro and she has a fondant gold crown. NOW TO THE QUESTION. .. are these faces drawn, painted or made as an edible image that's put on the cake? Pleeeeease help.
Can you post a picture of the cake so everyone can make their assessment as to how they made it?
The top cake it is kind of hard to tell. The bottom one looks like an edible image. The hair on the top looks to be done with a small star tip. Gorgeous cakes!
The top cake looks to me like maybe a fondant cutout then stars are piped over it. I agree w/ypierce about the bottom one. Makes the curls using something like tip 23 and sort of a rosette movement.
A small star tip would work best for the curls. And the bottom image looks like a printed picture and the top looks either painted or drawn.
