fearfulHi cakers!

I know tiered cakes need dowels and cake circles etc so smaller tiers don't sink into larger ones, but I can't decide how this applies to a 3-layer cake.

I'm make a cake with 3 10" diameter layers (2" tall each, with buttercream between. It'll be buttercreamed then covered with fondant and, because I have to travel over terrible roads to deliver, there'll be a dowel straight through, into the cake board.

But do I still need to do the short dowel/cake circle thing to support the top layer?

Thanks!

The rule of thumb has been to use supports w/a cake circle for anything over 4" tall.  Recently I've seen a few posts that say 6" unsupported is fine.  I think at this point it's up to you.  Being a 10"er i"d personally use the supports.    Also, the type/weight etc of your cake should effect your desision.

If it's just a 1 tier with 3 layers I think you are fine. I make all my cakes with 3 layers and don't use supports.
