Isn't the rule for stacking cakes a 4 in. difference? For example a 8 in cake stacked on a 12 in? I learned this from taking Wilton classes.

I have seen cakes stacked and they don't seem to follow the rule. Or maybe it just seems that way.

I like the look of the 4-inch difference best, but you don't have to do it that way. I've seen many cakes with a 2-inch difference. For example, a three-tier with 6-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch rounds.

I have also always heard that as the 'rule' and I personally like the 4 " difference because you have more room for decoration and the border does not look as crowded.

However, like so many things in life there are many exceptions to the rule. I think it is personal preference. I have seen a lot of cakes with only a 2" difference that were very pretty.

I think since we are cake artists then there are no rules we are only limited my our own imaginations.

Lastingmoments..that was very well said!! Personally I like the look of the 4" difference too..it gives more definition to each tier. I also like the look when the cakes are offset and lined up in the back..giving a stairstep look. Oh heck, I like them all sorts of ways!

I also learned the 4" rule as well. It definately leaves more room to trim the bottom of each tier. I have however seen 2" differences that look fabulous. So go with whatever fits your design.

Thanks. I guess I took my instructors word as hard and fast rules. I just need to not be so obedient and let creativity win!

Hang loose mami....there are no "rules" when it comes to our creative imaginations.

They give you guidelines, when they teach..but each client and cake are different.

We are artists..only we use buttercream and cake instead of clay.

If you stay within certain guidelines you will get bored quickly...experiment...expect some failures and learn from them...keep working..let your creativity run free...the sky is the limit...
