I Received a rather odd cake request from a not so nice person. When i say odd i mean disturbing, plain wrong, borderline gross ... who am i kidding it was a disgusting cake Im too embarrased to even say what it was or what it was for ...
anyway like a nice girl i made the damned cake (im very open minded and tolerant but this was my limit). I hated every second of it n nearly had a panic attack trying to deliver it (i kept it well covered, delivery was at a resturant)
My question to you wonderful people is, Have you ever recieved a disturbing or very odd cake request? How did you handle it? did you make the cake or say no? im not sure how you'd nicly say
If you found it that disturbing you should probably have not taken the order. What one person finds disturbing another person may not even blink about. That does not mean that they are a "not so nice person", just that they view the world differently to you.
AYou need to take control of your business. It's okay to say no to orders you feel uncomfortable with.

I really should have said no i just did'nt know how ... with out upsetting anyone.
no i mean she really was a nasty person to me, her guests everyone! she was so dificult to work with from day one. Then argue till she was blue in the face that her fondant cake can go in the fridge, cause i had no idea what i was talking about. her cake did not define her personality, it was just coincidence that she was a horible person too.
ALike I said - take control.
It's okay to say no. If someone allows themself to be upset - well then - let them be upset!
A"i'm sorry, i'm fully booked for that day" "i'm sorry, I don't provide that style of cake, let me refer you to another bakery" "i'm sorry, i'm not comfortable executing the design you have requested, let me refer you to another bakery" "you are gross , go away!"

I love it!
If she was nasty to start with then even more reason not to do the cake. Try some of scrumdiddly's excuses next time, especially the last!
AI did have a request a few months ago for some "kinky cupcakes" for a bachelorette party. I told her that my decorating style ranges from cute to pretty, but does not include kinky. She wanted my cupcakes though, so we agreed on a burlesque style that I was comfortable with and she was happy about. If she had really wanted to go with kinky I would have stuck with "not my style" and suggested she contact another baker.
AKinky I can do, I've even done bondage themed cakes. But this was just ... it crossed a line and I felt as though I had to say yes I guess. I do like the option on referring to another bakery ... although I think she would have been hard pressed to find one willing. I need to stop being so soft. Not everyday I'm grossed out. I have an incredibly strong stomach
AOk well now you gotta give me a hint on what kind of cake it was! Just a tiny hint. I'm guessing but I could be wrong! :)
ATrust me its not something you'd think of in a million of your wildest dreams. It might gross you out haha
AI prefer the response "you are gross, go away," that scrumdiddly gave. It's like the old saying, if it doesn't feel right, don't do it. On another note... What was it?
AOK OK OK ... forgive me. She requested a "hey I'm getting my penis chopped off" cake. She dudnt just want a penis cake. Or a vagina. She wanted to replicate her up coming surgery into a cake! She wantes a realistic disected penis! Veins, muscle n all. Now the fact that she's transgender was not my issue, if a pregnant lady wanted a cake if her crowning I'd be just as hesitant. Its the graffic nature and the fact that I'm sure her friends would be a little uncomfortable.
oh..... Maybe that explains her behaviour! She was nervous. Don't take it personally!
But like CC users before me said, if you felt uncomfortable, just say it, and dont take the order!
Perhaps her friends have her same sense of humor. Maybe they found it funny. But none of that matters. Posters here have stated, it's your business so just say nope, can't take that order.
I don't believe I could have taken that order. I have done "nude" cakes, kinky and recently got an order for a gross cake, (dog poo) that I was hesitant to take, but blood and gore are reserved for Halloween and only on whimsical themed cakes that wouldn't offend. Nothing against trans-gender. I have a few friends who have been through the entire process and would never celebrate in that graphic of a fashion. From what I understand it is a very emotional and personal process.
The damage is done here, but in the future, don't let customers bully you like this one. This woman most likely felt she needed to be a bully to get her way and probably relayed that to her friends as well. You deserve to be treated better. You are providing a service, but still need to be treated with respect. A simple "I am sorry, but I cannot provide that type of cake for you" would have sufficed and an offer of something else in its place. Let the customer find another source for what she wants in this situation.

THIS!!!
.
AIt was deffinatly a challenge and I think k did a very good job concidering. I think what upsets me the most is that dispite the fact that I did her order and did it very well ... her response when I delivered was "its reasonable" I felt gutted and felt like the discomfort wasn't worth it in the end. I will be saying no to any orders I get that I feel uncomfortable doung. I guess I thought its rude or bad business to say no purely because you can't stomach the idea if the order.
AThis did make me feel alot better thank yo

It's neither rude nor bad business.
Three years ago I had a couple of men come to the store and want a cake in the shape of a swastika to celebrate Adolf Hitler's birthday.
Do you think it was rude or bad business for me to refuse their order?
Like I said - take control and don't let anyone tell you how to run your business (like I'm doing now ).
AUgh. No, I pick and choose what I work on. And nasty people get no passes whatsoever, I don't care how much they'd be spending.
AThat's deffinatly something I'd refuse! And no that's not bad business in fact it might be bad business if you did accept the order. I completely see where everybody is coming from.

AAnimalGirl, you don't want to be known as "that" baker... Go to her, she will make any disgusting looking cake. I'm pretty sure thats not the niche you're going for.
A***no matter how good a cake could taste, I'm not taking a piece of penis or a baby crowning.
Now I've heard everything. What kind of idiot thinks that's a good idea for a cake? Good for her that she's getting her gender corrected but that doesn't give you a pass on being a gross jerk.
Well hats off to you for taking on an order of that description!
I'm almost inclined to ask you to PM me a pic, as I'd love to see how you interpreted it! I'd have NO clue where to start! Did she give you images to base it off of? Did you have to Google it?
Did she like it? Do you know what her guests thought?

I had to google and design it myself, i gave her a rough sketch to ensure i was hearing correctly. And i was. wasn't easy. i can pm you a photo, warning. Its pretty graffic. i thought i did a very good job, but her only response was "its reasonable" no thank you, nothing. so that kind of gutted me. Made it not really worth it. Maybe i would feel differently if she loved or at least liked it. Maybe it wouldn't have left such a bad taste in my mouth.
