He DID shoot himself.

I meant to put emphasis on whether he did that like right after he got kicked off, like it had something to do with it, not whether he did indeed shoot himself.

Ace of Cakes.

Oh how I miss the dear sweet staff of Ace of Cakes. Now IF I watch Cake Boss I just can't get through the episode without gagging a little. It's just too much contrived drama for me.

There was a "In Memory of Wesley..." at the end of the episode tonight. Glad to see it. So sad.

I read this thread and had to watch tonight. The whole beginning I was wondering who was Wesley and then once I figured it out, I was so depressed! I kept thinking,"I am watching a dead man." I know tons of movies have actors that have since died, but he isn't an actor, and it was so sad!

Yes it was sad, this show is pretty bad, it was a cake wreck, like a car wreck, I deided to watch a full episode. The bad cakes, the screaming, lol. At least the small desserts were mostly rated very good.

After watching 3 episodes last night, out of morbid curiosity, I think he probably killed himself out of humiliation. The cake mix, the crappy wrapped presents, the horrible 3d models... Then getting cut and riding in the back of a box truck... Weak minded people, or people who care about what other people think have killed themselves over less. I keep thinking of his children. Poor babies! I am just glad he had the strength of character to refrain from taking them out with himself, it seems to be commonplace for a parent to kill the kids and then themselves, nowadays. Tragic. They do have the opportunity to heal this way.

Honestly we don't know the time difference between when the show was tapped and when he killed himself, nor do we know if there were other underlying issues that he had. Yes it is a sad situation but we can't make judgements based on the little information that is out there.

Annabakescakes, I think maybe you shouldn't have voiced some of those thoughts here. They don't seem to be something I would hope his mother would read and could be taken very easily in the wrong way. What would you think if someone wrote these things about someone you loved very much? It just wasn't written with much sensitivity. Just something to take into consideration next time. Thank you.

Agreed on voicing your thoughts.

However, if I had to speculate, I would say that his actions may be much more related to possibly being re-deployed to Iraq and/or some type of PTSD rather than some stupid TV show. He did state at the beginning that he was hoping to use the show as a means to not have to go back.

May he RIP and my condolences to his family.

***************

That being said. I'm really put off by the sheer antics of this season, and the true lack of talent. They said how much they wanted better talent this season. Seriously, folks who have been decorating for 1 year are the best they can do? I was sad to see the blond hair guy go because his work looked incredible, but some of the others...

I find it sad that Buddy and his "crew" would stoop to the antics they have regarding the challanges of the cakes and so forth. One would think you're there to learn and he has said so at the end of the shows when he's making his decisions. But yet, he expects them to make fools out of themselves by putting on ice skates and attempting to deliver those huge cakes. He's talking out of the side of his mouth. I realize the producers are "writing" the show, but come on.....if he really had any input, he would put a stop to the embarrassment he's causing these people unless he's laughing about it back in his bakery..........we may never know

I was mad that they had to deliver the cakes to center ice. First of all you have a pregnant lady as part of the crew that has to go onto the ice. Thankfully they didn't expect her to put on ice skates, but she still should not have gone out on the ice at all. It would have been far too easy for her to fall and something to happen to the baby. Especially with all the kids flying around on the ice with no consideration for the contestants at all. I certainly hope that the production company does not instruct the kids to be rude to the contestants, because at that age kids take in everything.

Personally I don't understand the stupidity of alot of stuff on this show, see who can stay in the freezer the longest? what is the point in that ? Yes, I know that they have walk in freezers but come on unless it's an ice cream cake they don't need to stay in there for that long.
The ice skating rink was also ridiculous, I'm a skater and it's very very easy to fall and really get hurt. The pregnant lady with all those kids flying around (as previously mentioned) is another point, although I will say that any of those kids could have gone crashing into any of the bakers and sent them flying.
Also, to be honest i don't like the constant baking for his family, it somehow seems like slave labour!

Maybe it is a free country, so far...I wasn't being snarky or insensitive or sarcastic, I was dead serious. He was humiliated. And it seems like that is the point of the show, if you ask me. (Even if you don't) Many people here have expressed the confusion over why people who have bakeries would be on there, why they would have people who can't freaking bake or decorate on there, why they keep people who suck, why did they get rid of the talented people, why would they make people stay in the freezer, why was there cake mix if he wasn't supposed to use it... and I think the answer is to humiliate as much people as possible, and poor Wesley was definitely humiliated. It was breaking my heart watching him and the hateful things people were saying. And watching him get on the truck. And it is my opinion that while it may not have been the sole reason he felt like he could no longer live, I am dead serious when I think it may have been a contributing factor. Thank you.

And I didn't say he was weak minded I said weak minding people have killed themselves over less. I admire his courage and I thank him for serving our country. I pray his children and those who love him find peace.

The ice skating was ridiculous, I forgot about that. I felt indignant on behalf of the contestants at that curveball. I'd like to see Buddy, Mauro, et all take on an ice rink full of skaters while carrying a cake. That was ludicrous. Would they have been faulted if one of the cakes dropped because they are unaccustomed to carrying 400lb cakes while on ice skates??

I can't stand the way Buddy pronounces Minerva. "Minerver". It's driving me crazy.

so very sad, .......

Durdens mom Donna Durden, of Jacksonville, said she is still not certain what happened on the day her son died, but she was concerned about the amount of stress she saw her son under in his role with the military.

A member of Braggs 82nd Airborne Division who served as a cook and deployed twice to Iraq with his unit in 2008 and 2009, Wesley Durden had a wife and two children: a son, Wesley Joel III, 7; and a daughter, Giannia, 2.

I think there are a lot of soldiers who come home wounded, but you cant see the wounds, but theres still something wrong, she said.

His time on the TLC show was a blessing, Donna Durden said. Wesley Durden visited her in August for her birthday and made the announcement then that he was to be a contestant on "Next Great Baker."

Im thankful for the show. I believe the show helped keep him alive, she said.

That is so sad. People commit suicide for a number of reasons. And I'm not sure if weak minded is the right word all the time, but it's not exactly wrong all the time either. It's usally a number of things, emotional, physical, financial strains, that do all lead to a mental break or simple mental illness. I just wish everyone who has contemplated suicide to understand that it is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

How ironic! I am quite sure you mean to say "referring" NOT "refraining" icon_lol.gif

And as a person who has struggled with wanting to die many, many times, I think it would have been the easy way out. I had to once again put others before my self and think of what legacy I would leave for my kids it takes strength to put your mental anguish aside and go on for the sake of your children, to not cause them the anguish as well.

Not sure what exactly you mean, but I know when Minerva was embarrass AKA " got sick" and said she was over-stressed, I had an extreme eye roll moment. I have had times I got up Wednesday morning and didn't lay back down until Saturday night. You do what you have to get the job done. There are no do- overs when it is someone's wedding or birthday.

I could be wrong, but the only small sculpted characters I recall him making are the princess ones from his daughters birthday in Disney, and those characters were a bit "bulky" as well.

I hope more episodes of Amazing Wedding Cakes, and Fabulous Cakes come back on- those shows depicted wonderful cake artists and their work (with just enough drama for fun).

I agree his has an amazing artist esp Ralph and I wonder where he would be for some of his projects without these people!
