They seem sturdy and inexpensive. . .

Has anyone ever had the slightest problem with these bubble tea straws?

Are they sturdier than the ones at Jack in the Box or Starbucks or the same ones pretty much?

Wow, thanks for the link ArossTX, great to know where to buy them!! I´ve never used anything other than wooden dowels, straws make me nervous, will have to try soon! Just one question to all of you who have used them.... if I make a 4 or 5 tier cake, how many straws should I put on each tier? 14, 12, 10, 8 and 6 inches, all rounds? Thanks so much!
Oh and I would love to now if any of you ladies get a reply from Duff or Mary Alice, thanks again!

Here's another source for the bubble tea straws:

http://www.bubbleteasupply.com/store/store.php3?item_id=2

Also, the part where they were screwing the dowel in from below was on the deer cake, and they wanted to make sure the head didn't fall off. I was under the impression that they had this problem before.

Ditto!

I would have been so scared that I think I would have left the cake in the van, opened the door, and made sure there was a clear path before I even took the cake out of the van....<<shudder>>.....

I was expecting it to fall against her,...omg, she's good!!!

In a pinch once, when I did a sheet cake with a 3d bear on it for a baby shower, I was really short on time... LOL.... (long story) but I cheated and used a few brand new plastic golf tees (DH's idea) to hold up the bear from the sheet cake... it worked like a charm!! Also, on occasion, I've used lollipop sticks or straws for stacking cakes... they work well too!

unused chopsticks work wonders when you have nothing else too. It is amazing the creativity that comes from necessity huh?

I've used chopsticks a few times. As far as I'm concerned they're just like dowels except they're free (I have a whole bunch of them that I've saved over the years. They're unused and in paper sleeves.).

Oh, btw, I noticed that viewbaker mentioned using a center dowel bought from Home Depot. Is that food safe? I thought wooden items purchased from there weren't sanitary to be used with food.

so then what if your cake is taller than 12 inches and you need to dowel the whole thing? the ones made and packaged for cake are only 12 inches -- thats all i have ever seen. i also buy the large dowels and wash them well in warm soapy water and dry before using them when i have a cake taller than 3 tiers.

I started using regular drinking straws after reading Rose Beranbaum's Cake Bible. She discusses using them and the fact that since they are hollow they don't displace the cake. I haven't had any problems. I've done 4 tier cakes then doweled them through with one long one. I purchase my dowels at the craft store.

I have used the boba tea straws ever since I saw Annie's demo on her 3D cake. It is here on Cake Central titled: How To Make A Sculpted Cake (Baby in a Flower Pot)
By the generous and very talented: Anne Hjelte/Welch

The straws are amazing and can hold quite a heavy cake (aren't they all?)

BTW, Just to stir it up, I can't believe that 4 tiered cake was all cake if she was able to lift it and schlep it like she did. Maybe a dummy in there somewhere (hmmmm)??? really, some of the things they do on that show are incredible!!

Honestly when I lived in Italy and I knew I had a cake order coming up I used to visit the nearest ice cream shop that made THICK shakes and ordered one for me and stole like 10 straws along with it so that I could have access to supports. Yes, my name is Carrie and I am a thief. icon_sad.gif I did not have easy or quick access to dowels or the tea straws so this was my solution when I didn't have chopsticks. LOL Always think outside the box....and please don't follow in my footsteps and resort to a life of crime (it was just the straws I swear!)

So is there anywhere in the U.S. to get the straws? I know Hawaii is in the U.S. but isn't the shipping kinda high? I mean the straws are cheap, then to pay $5-$8 for shipping? That seems crazy.... or maybe I have the shipping prices wrong.....

Just wondered if anyone had found them in the U.S.

I wish we had bubble tea around here! I had it in Taiwan.... LOVED the stuff...... KY is late on getting anything cool though- heck we just got a Hard Rock Cafe a few years ago....
