Help With Modeling

I am extremely new to modeling items and am wondering if anyone has tips for making things look realistic?? How can I make plastic look like plastic or metal items look like metal? I am making a beauty school grad cake and will be making a hair dryer, straightener, shears, and rollers. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

I made rollers, and blow dryers, out of gumpaste, Dont know how real you want tem to look but this is what i made http://cakecentral.com/gallery/1917824

For a 'real metal' look one must use silver highliter petal dust mixed w/alcohol and painted on a light gray fondant or gp item.

you can get a plastic look by varnishing or spraying with edible clear spray
