The photos that I have seen with decorations made by the cake machine all seem to have fondant as the frosting under the decorations. Is that the only kind of frosting that looks good. Is it possible to use regular frosting and then decorate with the cutouts or is it necessary to have the very smooth fondant. Are there sheets of frosting that are good to cover the cake with before decorating it with the cutouts. Sorry I am such a novice. Thank you

You can put them on smoothed buttercream. Here's an example of one I did that way: http://cakecentral.com//gallery/1985665

The cut outs work wonderfully on a fondant or buttercream covered cake. Here's a couple of cakes I did with the cricut cake on buttercream. I just moisten the back with a tiny bit of water and press gently onto crusted buttercream.

Zoo animals - on this cake the cutouts were dried a bit so they could stand up in the buttercream leaves and grass surrounding the cake

I use the Viva method. You can see a great tutorial at Edna's website www.designmeacake.com. Click on Tutorials > How to Ice a Cake.

I use the basic Wilton recipe:

1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 tsp. clear vanilla
4 cups confectioner's sugar
2 tbsp. milk
