ROTFLMAO!!! Sooo true with me too! My family kinda dreads my cake- ing
I've had times where it isn't the cake, but it the people in the house that drive me nuts when I'm trying to decorate. I've literally shouted "I want doors on my kitchen complete with huge giant pad locks."
"What'cha doin'? Now what'cha doin'? Why are you doing that? What's that for??"
Mind you, this is my 36 year old other half.
The worst, though, is when he decides to "help."
"You should try (this). No, don't do it that way! It would be easier if you (insert inane suggestion here)."
When I was explaining why you disassemble a tiered cake before cutting it earlier today: "Well *I* don't think it should be done that way, you should find some way that makes more sense. There's really no need to take everything apart to cut it."
WHAT THE @(#~ YOU'VE NEVER SO MUCH AS BAKED A BATCH OF COOKIES IN YOUR @()*(@_@# LIFE!! *flail*heave*
He still hasn't learned to leave me be when I'm caking. All the cussing in the world doesn't seem to dissuade him.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!! I just read this thread to my husband, so he knows it not just me!! I turned 50 this year, and my family didn't think I even knew such colorful language!!

LMFAO!
I needed this tonight. I will more than likely have another breakdown tonight or tomorrow. I didn't mention somthing else about the cake I did today (twice) - when I went to take it to the person, my car broke down. The car is still sitting in a parking lot. And after I got someone to pick me up, I wasn't motivated to start another cake I need to do. But, I did, and I just took it out of the pan, and it fell apart. If this post wasn't here to make me laugh right now, I swear, there would be a moist blob of red velvet smashed on the floor, and my neighbors would have probably learned some new language.
oh yess i am atilda the hun on cake days. it seems that when i do wedding cakes, my family decides to asks questions and talk to me when i am doing cakes. and please, Quiet! No noise period. i got to do better than this, but cake decorating, especially with a tiered cake can be frustrating especially when family does not respect my space.

I have a husband who sits and does nothing while I'm decorating, and it's his job to take over mommy duties. Yet my young children dare to venture into the kitchen to tell on each other or ask for the most ridiculous things. I'll ask "have you spoke to daddy? daddy is your go to person tonight. Don't bug mama, mama is in the ZONE!!!
tell me about it, only my kids are 14 and over. and especially when they are playing that devilish play station3, they get loud and crazy and that grits my nerve. and mine keep asking over and over, whose wedding, whose cake ect. just please leave me alone!!
I just LOVE this! I have a one year old and a six year old. My husband works nights so that leaves me alone with the kids, which is why I usually have to do all my cake-ing late at night. However the day before a cake is due I usually work all night and it's take out for us. My daughter can entertain herself, but I am usually battling with my son pulling every pan out of the cupboard, lids, bowls and anything else he can reach. He always seems to climb into drawers and need help out right when I begin rolling or coloring fondant. I think my frustration level is usually through the roof from both my son and the cake not cooperating.
Then when my DH IS home, his idea of "watching the kids" is watching TV and yelling from the couch to my son to come back in the living room. Doesn't happen. Then when it's time for kids to go to bed, he asks my daughter "Do you want me or your mom to take you to bed." Guess what the answer is.
Boy oh boy, I can't wait until my husband and kids get to the point that when I start decorating, they leave the house. Until then, those bad bad words usually have to stay only in my head until the little ears are in bed!
My husband actually will feed, wash and put our kids to bed when I'm making cakes... He knows how ugly I can get
What an awesome thread! I mean I knew I wasn't the only one that would throw fits when things weren't going quite right (especially about 20 minutes before delivery, let's say). I've been lucky in that the last few cakes have gone well. But I'm due for a cake-meltdown. Generally whatever music is playing goes up a touch louder to drown out my profane commentary. Dad knows to stay in the other room if he happens to be home when I'm decorating. On that note, I best get back to my cake! I'll have images of my fellow CCers throwing cake at walls to get me through!
DH just says "Guys, lets leave mommy alone right now"; somehow even that phrase can piss me off at times.
I can so relate to this one!!!
When I was explaining why you disassemble a tiered cake before cutting it earlier today: "Well *I* don't think it should be done that way, you should find some way that makes more sense. There's really no need to take everything apart to cut it."
Feel free to tell your husband *I* said he was dead wrong. And that I just love using the word "dead" and "husband" in the same sentence!
If any of you ever read my facebook, you'll see that today I was ranting and raving about a 6" round cake that was giving me fits today. I threatened to get rid of the 6"round pan AND to tell my son he has to change his weddign cake design because I am not screwing with a 6 incher anymore! (Oh wait! That didn't sound right, did it?)

because I am not screwing with a 6 incher anymore! (Oh wait! That didn't sound right, did it?)
LMAO!!!!
so you only do 8" now
I am not screwing with a 6 incher anymore!

so you only do 8" now

what can I say.....
oh, and yes: I throw, I curse, and I BREAK things
I am enjoying this thread thanks everyone for making me lol and not feel like a total cake meltdown nut!
I think the thing that winds me up more than anything is when my other half comes home from work, when i've been in the kitchen ALL DAY working on a cake, feeling pretty good about the design and outcome and smiling at my job, and he comes in and says "mmm not bad" or "mmm its good but you've done better". ARRRGGGHHH the other one is "you doing the model sitting down again"? Right YOU do it! you try getting the model to be all singing and dancing when it has an hour in the car to delivery! The other classic is "are you in the zone? are you piping?" (whilst standing over me while i'm trying to do really fine piping messages). I put down the bag and say "want to do it"? the response "oh no I'd need a LITTLE practice" LITTLE????..
ooo i feel better already for getting that off my chest and sharing
I'm so glad I read this!!
I have as yet only done one cake decorating escapade, and I nearly chucked the whole thing out the window when my fondant started splitting and the top layer of cake started to slide!!
There was an unnatural amount of profanity and throwing of spatulas, but with some repair work it came out OK (luckily, it was for my own event so I wasn't letting anyone down ha ha!)
Hubby SHOULD know to keep out of the way, but he dared to try and placate me with "it looks FINE. Nobody will notice" and was immediately bellowed at and a hissy fit ensued!!
Oh well- hopefully I'll learn from my mistakes for next time!
So nice to know I'm not alone. I am like the A-Team I love it when a plan come's together. But sometimes I turn into Linda Blair, thank goodness my head hasn't started spinning yet. But " thatslifeca" to kill a airbrush in the driveway with a hammer as the neighbour watched, you win
Im loving this thread! its so lovley to hear all your ladies (And perhaps some gents) letting of steam
I had Sooo much trouble the other day with a couple of dummy cakes, I managed to cover a 4inch, with no problem and id heard all about little ones giving people gip so i was worried, I did it no problem . . Then i move onto the 8 inch, and can i heck get it covered . . . .Now my 8 inch dummy is full of dents where i went at it with the rolling pin . . . . Didnt help . . But i felt great after!
Feel free to tell your husband *I* said he was dead wrong. And that I just love using the word "dead" and "husband" in the same sentence!

When I have a little extra time, I'm going to throw together an 8/6 and hand him a knife. "Have at it, honey!" He's one of those guys who has to try it himself before he acknowledges his idea was a little off.
I almost hate to admit this, but I wish all my cakes were the little 6 inchers. I love those things! They're so damn cute and I never seem to have the trouble others do in decorating them. Petit fours are easy for me too, so maybe I'm just backwards...
As I stood with a stunted look on my face looking at the second dropped iced chocolate cake of the night on the floor, my 17 DD had the nerve to laugh!
I quickly reach down and picked up some of the cake and threw it at her! The look on her face was priceless. Mom doesn't do things like that. We laughed and laughed, then I cleaned up the floor and made another! That least I learned to clean a place to put the cake BEFORE you pick it up! LOL And 14 years later she still likes to tell about my melt down.
Well I just dropped my second tier on my first tier of a my very first 3 tier cake.
I did actually cry a bit. But first I swore and threw a chair...
This is so not like me! I am curious does caking bring out the worst in everyone?
Just needed to take a few mins... Now repair time.
Oh yes! Caking and tempers go hand in hand! Caking is how I first learned how angry & frustrated I could actually get! Like others that have commented, my DH also knew to stay far far away from the crazy woman in the kitchen when she was working on a cake!!
I feel soooooo much better after reading through this thread! I've come unglued quite a few times. At times hubby will start the 50 questions kick, but with one look... He's learned to just keep time when I call for TIME...I don't watch the clock, but when I yell TIME, someone in the house knows to answer me right away!
I've had the cursing, sobbing, I'm never doing another freaking cake again fits! I've had the throw the spatula, fling the icing, kick the cabinet fits. I've had the curse, throw, kick, bang, fling, yell fits. Any of the above will work, it just depends on how far away the deadline is as to which one happens. A few weeks ago, ALL 3 happened in succession and hubby loaded up all 4 kids, and they left home. About an hour later my mom calls asking if it was safe for them to come back home!
Glad to know I'm part of an elite group! I think the fits make the cakes better!!!!
Its not a temper, its an 'artist tantrum'!!
well said!! And OH YEAH !! I have had fondant stains on the wall where I have thrown it in frustrations. Thankfully Mr.Clean magic erasers do their job!!
I am so glad everyone is enjoying this thread apparently I needed this... I love to read all the stories. My tantrum was not over after the cake was done. I had it sitting in my dining room waiting pick up this morning and my husband planned a little party last night to watch a sports event. I was a little leery to say the least about my cake being out with a house full of people and so I should of been... A few excited stomps on the floor in excitement from a few excited men. AND... flower fixing time this morning... GRRRR.... It never ends I ended up having a bit of a tantrum at the end of the night as well...
indydebi : You always sem to make me laugh you are quite the riot!

Good one Indy! That gave me a good laugh!
And.. Yes! Yes! To those evil 6 inch pans! I have NEVER had a 6 inch cake bake up without a freaky looking pointy dome, no matter what recipe I use, or oven temp I use.
I rarely get pointy domes with my bigger pans, maybe once in a blue moon a small dome might happen, but 95% of the time my cakes bake up just fine.
But 6 inchers? I dread having to bake them! I know before they even go in the oven I'll get the pointy domes. I know I'll have to level them off with a knife when they're baked. I know that will become a PIA cause I am not the greatest knife leveler..
6 inch pans... I dispise them.. They are truly cursed!
OMG! I feel so much better now! I thought I was the only one swearing and saying "I'll never do this or that again" or "I need to leave cakes alone". Thanks for the relief. I mainly, do cakes at night when everyone is sleep, so when my family wake up in the morning it is complete. You can't watch me or ask questions when I'm in the zone. Heaven forbid you ask me to teach you how to decorate a cake when I'm working on a project ! When I lived with my older sister, she used to call me "The Elf" at that time Keebler elves were popular(LOL). Thanks everyone!
*stands up, looks around room, and waves* Hi, my name is Christy, and while I love caking, it brings out the B in me!
My hubby is one that tries to help and ticks me off worse - though, I have to admit, he's really paid attention and has gotten to be pretty helpful...most of the time.
It seems like every time I do a cake, I have an episode. lol. I'm the most mellow, easy going person around, even with menopause in full gear. But, doing cakes, always brings out that sick feeling in my stomach, wanting to start over, its not turning out feeling. I usually say, I don't want to do cakes anymore, this is the last one. Then, I start looking at everyones pictures, and want to try something new. It takes about a week to get the itch again. Totally understand what you are going through.
This is so meeeeeee! Husband has asked me several times if I am always "going to have an episode" every time I sell a cake! HA!!!
I am not screwing with a 6 incher anymore!
ah yes: Much Ado About Nothing

Had to take a potty break, I was laughing so hard
I, too, am guilty of colorful language when caking doesn't go well. It's a hobby for me. My DH wants to know why do I do cakes if it upsets me so much when things don't go right. I say (loudly) BECAUSE I ENJOY IT!!!!!!
