I'm boycotting the cake division this year for my county fair which put me out for state fair entering.

So it was a very quiet July/early August this year for my kitchen and a little odd as well with no cake entry preparations going on.

Both of you have great cakes.

Best of luck to you for a ribbon.

Yes. The flowers on my cake are made from gum paste and I colored them all by hand.

Thanks for the compliment! icon_biggrin.gif

I would love to, but we're going to be on vacation while our fair is here. No complaining from me though icon_biggrin.gif

I made this cake for my friend's birthday last week at work. She said that it was so good that I should enter one like it in the State Fair in October. This would be my first contest.

glendaleAZ - that cake is great! Go for it! This was my first time entering a contest, too. I didn't win any ribbons but I learned a lot for the next time around!

Question...is it worth doing a cake for a fair??? do they pay...and is it enough to cover all the costs of doing the cake?? i've often wanted to enter a cake in the state fair, but wasn't sure if it was really worth the hassle. icon_confused.gif

I know for our fair the entry fee was $8 ... and the most you could win in a regular category was $8. Other special prizes like cake stands were awarded in select categories, but the most expensive prize in the decorating divisions was a $25 gift certificate.

It really isn't about the money at all, it is the prestige of winning a blue ribbon or best in show ribbon thing.

This is sooo true! I think I won $8 for my second place. So it isn't about the money. I had lots of people I work with tell me they saw my cake at the Fair and how pretty it was. I'm rewarding myself icon_biggrin.gif and going on the cake cruise thumbs_up.gif

I just won first for my Sunflowers cake - my first time entering any competition!

I agree - it's not at all about the prize money, which is a pittance. It's about the prestige, bragging rights, and potential marketing. I um, "accidentally"... stuck my business card in the bottom corner of the display case, in front of my cake and ribbon. Two brides called me within 3 hours!

It really depends on your state fair. Last year I won $100 for best use of Fondant at ours. This year I think best wedding cake gets $300. I entered an Oregon Birthday cake this year.
