How many of you are submitting cakes to your state fairs. Here is mine.

Alaskahsm - Your cake is freakin' AWESOME! Good luck!
Here's mine (amateur bridal cake division): http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1441113
I'll find out tomorrow if I placed.
I'm boycotting the cake division this year for my county fair which put me out for state fair entering.
So it was a very quiet July/early August this year for my kitchen and a little odd as well with no cake entry preparations going on.
Both of you have great cakes.
Best of luck to you for a ribbon.
Diva, Are those sugar flowers? Those are awesome.
Yes. The flowers on my cake are made from gum paste and I colored them all by hand.
Thanks for the compliment!
I would love to, but we're going to be on vacation while our fair is here. No complaining from me though
I was pretty happy with a second place ribbon on my Fair entry. http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_1440538.html
cblupe - I was watching that demo at ICES (Sunday evening) is that the technique you used for the grapes? Nice work!
I entered two cakes in our county fair this past Sunday and I received blue ribbons on both. I was soooooooooooooo excited!!!
Your cakes are gorgeous ... and those ribbons well-deserved! Congrats, cblupe!
I made this cake for my friend's birthday last week at work. She said that it was so good that I should enter one like it in the State Fair in October. This would be my first contest.
glendaleAZ - that cake is great! Go for it! This was my first time entering a contest, too. I didn't win any ribbons but I learned a lot for the next time around!
I entered two cakes! One in Canyon County in one in the Western Idaho State Fair. I was awarded "Adult Champion" for my Kick Up You Heels Cake and 1st place in my category for the 3-D cowboy boots and bandana cake board.

I saw your cake at the Western Idaho State Fair!!! Very nice!!
Thanks idgalpal! Your's is really pretty to--nice job! I think fairs are really fun to compete in...and it's a good feeling to take home a ribbon.
Question...is it worth doing a cake for a fair??? do they pay...and is it enough to cover all the costs of doing the cake?? i've often wanted to enter a cake in the state fair, but wasn't sure if it was really worth the hassle.

I know for our fair the entry fee was $8 ... and the most you could win in a regular category was $8. Other special prizes like cake stands were awarded in select categories, but the most expensive prize in the decorating divisions was a $25 gift certificate.
It really isn't about the money at all, it is the prestige of winning a blue ribbon or best in show ribbon thing.

This is sooo true! I think I won $8 for my second place. So it isn't about the money. I had lots of people I work with tell me they saw my cake at the Fair and how pretty it was. I'm rewarding myself and going on the cake cruise
I just won first for my Sunflowers cake - my first time entering any competition!
I agree - it's not at all about the prize money, which is a pittance. It's about the prestige, bragging rights, and potential marketing. I um, "accidentally"... stuck my business card in the bottom corner of the display case, in front of my cake and ribbon. Two brides called me within 3 hours!
It really depends on your state fair. Last year I won $100 for best use of Fondant at ours. This year I think best wedding cake gets $300. I entered an Oregon Birthday cake this year.
Whoo Hoo. I got third on my partridge family cake.
Congratulations!
