TexasSugar It helps that you suggested I do make my cake. After all it is my 30th birthday. I've come up with an idea. Instead of making an 8" round I'm going to make a 6". That way I still get my piece, but there isn't as much of it. I do love the cake I'm going to make so I'm very excited. I used to make it a lot when I worked at WalMart, but this will be the first time I've ever made it at home so I'm excited.

As far as my husband it's an ironic story. He's in the military and has been since we met. I remember years ago he would go take his fitness tests and fail and he come home and say, "We need to go on a diet". HA HA HA Now I just need to tell him the same thing. We are both overweight and we have a daughter. Both of our families are prone to being overweight. I don't want her to end up like us.

I never thought of making a food journal. I'm going to have to try that. I really appreciate this topic and everyone that is so supportive. It's a great thing.

rachel_n_jazmin - I absolutely agree with Tracy (texas sugar) If you start feeling deprived, you set yourself up for failure. If there is something that you are really craving, you shouldn't deny yourself just a small amount. Absolutely have a piece of birthday cake. The key is moderation. I can't imagine never being able to eat some of my favorite desserts. I'm just learning to eat less of it, just enough to satisfy that craving. I'm also working on making some of my high calorie favorites less caloric by substituting some of the ingredients. Haven't gotten very far yet, but I'll pass on the ones that are successful. It's a challenge but it's actually kinda fun too.
I also write down everything that I eat. It helps to keep me on track. If I have extra calories left, I know that I can eat another snack without feeling guilty. I love the 100 calorie microwave popcorn. Always hits the spot.

Rachel, it is totally up to you and your husband to set an example for your daughter, don't be afraid to remind him of that often. She will learn by your example. While I don't think kids should know the word diet, there are a lot of little changes you can do at family meals and for snacks to help make them healthier with out having to change everything.

I was always heavy as a child and the rest of my family could stand to lose some weight too. I want to get my healthy habits in control so that when I have a child I can pass that on to them, and hopefully they will naturally learn to eat well.

For my food journal, I have picked up a little spiral note pad at Michaels, for a buck. They have 80 sheets in it, and it usually only takes one sheet per day, so I can easily use it for months. I just make notes of what I eat, and calories if I know them.

For example my breakfast was listed as:
yogurt - 80
bagel thin - 110
ww cream cheese - 60
then I make a notation of the total for that meal, so I can do quick math later in the day.

Even if you don't list out all the calories, such as my lunch was a turkey burger from a place that doesn't have nutritional facts posted on their website, just listing everything you eat can help open your eyes to how much food, snacks and what not you are eating.

You can also watch and see if there is a certain time of the day that you tend to go for snacks, such as after dinner. Which would let you evaluate why that may be a prone snack to for you. I've also ready about noting moods when you find yourself grazing or snacking, which can also let you see if you are an emotional stress eater.

I know right now my biggest snack time is in the evenings and late night while watching TV. And 3pm there is something about 3pm.

I did do another 20 mins on the exercise bike last night at my parent's house. It was harder than the first night, but I did it.

I ride the stationary bike in front of the TV twice a day (after lunch and dinner). Depending on how interesting the show is, I often forget how long I've been riding and ride longer than I had planned.

Awesome on the exercise Tracy and Anna. I had full intentions of using the treadmill yesterday and today but thus far, just haven't made it in there yet. Gotta get my butt in gear.

Since Hank is out of commission, I think I'm going to try to talk myself into doing something like crunches and hand weights. Not cardio, but still better than nothing, right?

Eating could be way better, but I'm tracking what I eat. Last night I needed up doing some crunches and some leg lifts. Class night tonight so I'll have to see how energetic I feel after it.

Awesome!!! Tracy's gettin her groove back. icon_lol.gif
I had the munchies yesterday for some reason. I overate by about 100 calories. Felt bad about it last night when I went to bed. Soooo, this morning I did 50 minutes on the tread mill instead of 30. I feel better now. thumbs_up.gif

Glad you feel better! I went out to eat Mexican food last night, so we won't talk about how bad I did. icon_wink.gif It took me forever to get up off the couch to do the crunches. And let me just say, no matter how much I love the looks of my new floor, it is hard! I had a yoga mat, but it still wasn't all that comfortable laying down on it doing the leg lifts and such. My hip bone was digging into the hard floor.

Oh yeah, I can see that would be uncomfortable. Maybe you can fold over a blanket or something and put underneath the mat? Anything to give you more of a cushion.
I've got an exercise ball that I got for Christmas. Believe it or not, I still haven't used it. I've made up every excuse you can imagine not to. I think it's time to figure out how to use this thing. Anyone else exercise with one?

I've had one for years, and still don't really know what to do with the ball. icon_smile.gif

I'll try the blanket idea. If not I may have to look for some thicker mats.

So far the only thing I've used that ball for is to bounce it to my grandson. He's 3 and gets the biggest kick out of that ball. It's got the instructions on the ball and it also came with a video. Of course, I've never played the video either icon_redface.gif I really need to step it up.

Sounds great. I've been doing it on Monday because that way, I'm more careful on the week-ends with what I eat. lol Otherwise the week-ends could prove dangerous for me. It kinda keeps me on track.

Weekends are the toughest for me. Mostly because I like to sleep in, and that throws all the meal times off. So I guess for me Fridays seem like I can fix what I did the weekend before, before I weigh in again. icon_smile.gif

There ya go Tracy. Sounds resonable to me.
Ok, I had hoped to share a recipe that I tried last night (Raspberry chicken) It sounded so good and it took me 2 weeks to find the raspberry vinegar. I just knew it was going to be great. Well, not so much. I couldn't taste the raspberry at all, only vinegar.....I must say though that the chicken did come out tender and juicy. It just tasted like crap. icon_lol.gif Back to the drawing board. I'm preparing salmon tonight with a sauce that I purchased from Tastefully Simple. It's Bayou Bourbon Glaze. I don't know how the salmon is going to taste being marinated in this but boy is it good by itself. I'll let ya know how it comes out. Having boiled taters, cole slaw and green beans with it. So what's everyone else having for dinner?

Sounds yummy!

My dad offered me pizza for dinner. I don't go buy pizza for myself so when they get it, they let me know. Since I have class tonight, it'd make for an easy dinner for me. Plus then while I am at their house I can sit down on the exercise bike.

They are getting Papa Murphey's DeLite pizza. They are thin crust, with chicken and various veggies on top, so not too horrible when it comes to pizza calories.

I do have some chicken breasts in the fridge I need to figure out what I am going to do with soon!

That pizza sounds really good. I LOVE pizza. Tombstone is my favorite. But the Lean Cuisine pepperoni pizza is right up at the top of my list too.
I just got through portioning out 100 calories each of strawberries, grapes, honeydew and cantaloupe for snacking. I figured it would save a lot of time when I was in the mood for them. I also portioned out my popchips. If I'm not careful with those, I'll eat more than I should. They are so good. Taste alot like Munchos

These are the ones that we get. icon_smile.gif

I need to get back to portioning out my veggies and fruits. I eat them more when they are ready to go vs having to take the time to cut them up.

Wow, those pizzas look great and not so bad for ya either. Disappointed though, we don't have one in my city. However, there is one in Virginia Beach which isn't really too far from here. I'm gonna have to try one of these pizzas. Thanks so much for posting the link...

They are good for a take out pizza. It's also nice that you can go pick it up, and keep it cold until you are ready to bake it. icon_smile.gif

About time to leave this job, and get ready for the other one. Two hours on my feet teaching flowers then hopefully at least 20 mins on the exercise bike before yummy pizza.

Hope you have a good evening!

Yum, that does sound good too. I've never prepared baked spaghetti squash with sauteed veggies. When you have a few minutes, can you tell me please how you make it? Sounds good and nutritious as well.

I wanted some spaghetti squash last time I went to the store but couldn't find any. icon_sad.gif

I need to spend some time this weekend making a menu plan for next week and getting some veggie/food prep so I don't have any excuses not to eat healthy.

Butternut, I'm going to try to copy and paste the recipe, but I don't know if it'll work. If not, I'll just pm you the link. The recipe was from allrecipes dot com.
Ingredients

1 spaghetti squash, halved lengthwise and seeded
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 1/2 cups chopped tomatoes
3/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
3 tablespoons sliced black olives
2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
Place spaghetti squash cut sides down on the prepared baking sheet, and bake 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a sharp knife can be inserted with only a little resistance. Remove squash from oven, and set aside to cool enough to be easily handled.
Meanwhile, heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Saute onion in oil until tender. Add garlic, and saute for 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes, and cook only until tomatoes are warm.
Use a large spoon to scoop the stringy pulp from the squash, and place in a medium bowl. Toss with the sauteed vegetables, feta cheese, olives, and basil. Serve warm.

Texas - thats what vie been doing, trying to plan out meals and snacks in advance so at least I have a plan. I also used to follow weight watchers, so ive been using all my tools and stuff from that again. I just need to find the motivation to exercise!
