You can start with pink icing, then add your red. I find that if I leave my red icing to sit overnite, the red gets darker.

I agree with deb's remarks. Also, I find Americolor gels to be more intense than Wilton pastes.

Kool Aid. It also will change theflavor of your icing! Add about 1/3 of a cup of water to the package of kool aid and add that to your frosting. What are you doig the rainbow cake? My instructor told us if we wanted to buy the premade red we could. I did so much easier too!

You can also start out with orange, then add your red...unless ya have americolor...it works well but ya gotta let it sit a while. If ya know your gonna need red, make it the day before. I learned that the hard way icon_wink.gif

I am very very new to this, but have been experimenting with colors for a while on cupcakes, cookies, etc... I have found that there seems to be a point where the red just won't get any more red, and it still looks pink. One of my two very ugly posted cakes has a "red" icing on it that looked a lot pinker when I initially made it. I found that the longer it sat, the more red it got; even if it looked pink when I made it.

I have never started with pink or orange when I have made red. I just use Wilton "no taste" red and Americolor Super Red. It takes quite a bit of color. I do agree with the other posts in that the longer it sits the more red it becomes.

I have also used Americolor Super Red and it gets darker when you let it sit overnight or 24 hrs. and it doesn't have a bad taste.

Start by making your icing brown, then add the red & let it sit for quite a while. Americolor is the best red you can get in the USA.

I had the hardest time getting the red for the elmo cake I just did. I colored the icing the morning before I needed it so that it would have time to darken. I had planned to go out and buy some more No-taste red as I was out of it. Unfortunately, I had an emergency and spent the night at the hospital with a friend. I did add more red to it but it took a lot of red. I didn't find that it altered the taste but I ended up using different reds (I ran out of the others) I used red-red, christmas red and spiderman red. I think next time I will be getting some Americolor red as I 've heard they are much better than the Wilton's colors. Good Luck
