Most of you know me and know that I am not a 'toot-your-own-horn' type, but I finished a cake and I wanted to post it. It's a jack-o-lantern cake, but it actually lights up from the inside with a tea candle. I made it for my hubby's cousin's birthday (it's on Halloween). I figured it'd get lost since I posted it last night and Halloween is over.
Thanks Mike.. the front of the cake is a gumpaste face plate to make a hollow area to be illuminated, and the back of the cake is the actual cake. It's a bit more than a 1/2 circle with a small amount carved out in the center to make sure the candle didn't melt the cake at all.

I was thinking she should be writing out detailed instructions now. I'm sure they will get asked for a lot.

Awesome cake and idea. Yes, I would love instructions too.
Just a quick thought on the tea light though, they make those little flamelass tea lights now, you know the ones that are battery powered. . The are pretty cool, they dont get hot so no melted icing.
Awesome job our Queen of buttercream!
It amazes me how some folks on here manage to get cakes not to look like cakes...i'm still trying to get mine to look like cakes
Hats off to ya! Definately no trick here just a treat well done!
Wow - amazing cake! You could give Duff a run for his money with your ability to light up a cake!! LOL!
Awesome job!
That is just. too. COOL! Some peoples' creativity just amazes me--it's awsome! Would've loved a picture tutorial as well, but you knew everybody would be asking for that
Thanks everyone.. I had wanted to use one of those battery operated tea lights, but I couldn't find one.. everyone was sold out so I had to use the real thing. It wasn't hard to do.. I used a plastic pumpkin to give me the shape for my face plate. I laid a piece of thickly rolled out gumpaste over it and trimmed it so it went a little less than 1/2 way around. Then using my hands and a cel-pin I made the markations down the pumpkin to give it that pumpkiny look. I let that set up for a few hours and then I cut the face out and left it to dry for 5 days. I made sure that it wasn't stuck in any place before I let it sit too. Then I baked three 10" round layers and torted and filled and chilled it and then carved the shape. Covered it in fondant and placed the front plate on it. Filled in any areas that weren't meshing with the plate and covered the back of the cake once again in fondant. I trimmed the excess so it would line up with the front plate and made the markations in the back side of the cake to make it look like a real pumpkin would and then used my air brush to paint the whole thing orange. Built me a stem and colored that brown and viola.. a ligh up jack-o-lantern.
Jeanne that is a GREAT PUMPKIN. How creative using the candle. I don't know if I could have cut it up. What a wonderful birthday cake. It's an "ORIGANAL". Now let's see what you come up with for next year! Maybe a head on a turntable?
What a beautiful cake! I would be proud if I could make a real jack-o-lantern to look like that Thank you sooo much for the detailed instructions, the spirit of sharing in this website is even more beautiful than the creations of all these talented people.
