Can you use wiltons Gum Tex instead of tylose to make the fondant usable for figures. The extra icing site tutorial on making modeling fondant only mentions tylose or cmc. I amke my own fondant to begin with (using colette peters recipe from cakes to dream on) will that make a difference?

You will get a different texture but it certainly will be similar and do able.
I have often taken a blob of fondant and dipped it into GumTex, kneeding it in and it worked just fine.....in fact I think it dries faster than if using Tylose.
