I remember the first time that I bought Wilton's fondant to make some trim for a cake. I decided to taste a little, and was certain that it had passed it's expiration date or something. I drove back to the store and asked for a refund. The clerk (our Wilton instructor) said, "Oh, that's how it's supposed to taste." icon_confused.gif Trust me - NOTHING is supposed to taste like that.

Bleck! Wilton is horrible. I actually wrote to them after tasting it and they replied. They think and according to them people agree that it has mild vanilla taste. To me it isn't like any vanilla I've ever tasted. More like sweet play-doh. I tried mmf...too sweet. Now I am a satin ice fan. Buy it from intotheoven. Love it. I only use wilton to make flowers and figures that won't be eaten because I like the texture and it dries quickly.

I've had experience with Wilton and Satin Ice fondant and I have to say that they both have their strengths and weaknesses. First of all, Wilton fondant does not taste that bad. It's not as good as Satin Ice and I wouldn't cover a cake with it, but it's not inedible. I find Wilton fondant to be much nicer to work with because it's not as sticky or soft as Satin Ice.
Satin Ice, on the other hand, tastes much better than Wilton. It smells so good when you open the container that you think you're going to gain a pound just from the smell! icon_lol.gif
I guess I'm saying, if it's not going to be eaten, make it out of Wilton, if it's going to be eaten, go with Satin Ice. thumbs_up.gif Although, kids will eat anything off a cake if you tell them it's edible but I find that they get so caught up in actually being able to eat the little replica of their dog or even themselves, that they don't mind too much what kind of fondant it is. icon_smile.gif

If I were you, I would try all of them, just to say that you have. That way, you'll be able make your own opinions about them. icon_biggrin.gif Everyone has their favorites and you just got to try them out to see what you like. Happy fondanting! thumbs_up.gif

I actually used Wilton a couple of times. I used a lot and I do mean a lot of the butter flavoring and mixed with it as you would the gel coloring. Made my DH taste it to make sure that is tasted better. If not added more. I used it before I found CC and MMF. I tried MMF and found that it taste heavenly especially compared to what I was using. Can't wait to try Satin Ice. Hope to be getting some soon!!

Wow, you must not have gotten the Black SatinIce... It stunk up my pantry so bad, I had to double-bag the pail and store it in the garage...

Wilton is on the terrible-testing side, and I agree with everyone that it is the *easiest* to work with of the fondants I've tried. I used it on a couple of cakes before I knew there were alternatives. Choco-Pan seems the most edible to me, though still I let our friends know that it is just to look pretty not necessarily to be eaten...

Someone posted a thread yesterday about making fondant by just basically cooking sugar and water to a soft ball stage, and stabilizing it with cream of tartar -- that's it! I cannot wait to try it, my candy thermometer has been dying to get out of its package since I got it a few months ago!!!... It seems like it would make the most edible fondant version so far... Need excuse to try!

Oh, and I just bought some marzipan, the European alternative for covering cakes, very curious to see how that stacks up, too!â¦

I tried Wilton fondant on my first fondant cake and I agree that it is inedible.

It tastes like...you know in Kindergarten when you make your own Play-doh and then you'd take off a pinch to try?? Like that. I don't taste vanilla...I taste dough.

Pretty gross. And my friends and I also enjoy craptacular. icon_biggrin.gif

I have to agree, it isn't good. It isn't even sweet. Not even sure what to tell you it tastes like because I haven't eaten anything like it. It is pretty cheap though and it is good for learning on...use it on practice cakes. It is extremely pliable and easy to work with which is probably why it tastes like s&^t. But if you are just learning go ahead and use it and then take it off before you let people eat your cake! I learned on it as well. BTW I never had good luck with MMF either...try Toba Garret's recipe for fondant here in the recipe section. It works wonderfully!

It tastes like a soapy marshmallow.

I buy it when Hobby Lobby has their 40% off and use it only for fondant figures....... since no one will be eating them. If I do a fondant covered cake, I use Satin Ice.

I've tried fondant one time. Unfortunately it was Wilton fondant! All I can say is.... gross! It tasted like fish oil. The texture was....gritty. Needless to say I haven't used fondant since. I'll just stick to good ol BC.

Which post was that? If it's just cooked sugar and cream of tartar, that sounds more like it's candy fondant, which I've worked with before. I used to do candy making for years before branching out into baking and cakes, and that's a common recipe for bon bon fillings. Candy fondant is much softer and doesn't roll out very easily. It's a totally different beast than rolled fondant. I'm curious to see this recipe!

As for Wilton fondant...I love both it and their gumpaste for decorations. It's so easy to work with and dries hard, but isn't glass fragile. As for taste...euugh. It tastes like some form of chemical compound to me.

I've used Satin Ice and MMF as well. I love the taste of those much better, but they are a pain to work with as far as decorations go. They are far too soft and never seem to dry completely, even when mixing gumpaste into it. I'd only use it for covering, but even then I'm finding the more I work with fondant in general, the more I just want to use it for decor only. It's just not worth the expense and the hassle to cover a cake in it.

Wow I'm surprised how awful everyone claims it to be! I've never tasted fondant other than the stuff I've had to make since everyone I know gets their cakes from dairy queen! icon_lol.gif

Sometimes I wish that I could buy ready-made fondant, because every time I make it from scratch, I end up in tears... really! I don't even use it anymore because it's a pain in the butt and it's waaaaayyyy too sweet!

I'm one of Wilton's biggest fans. Most every product and pan I've used from them has been great and just about every single cake deco item I own has Wilton stamped somewhere on it. A dream job for me would be designing cakes for the Yearbook.

And even *I* can't champion the taste of their fondant. I'll happily use it to make flowers or decoratons, just please Lord, don't make me eat it!! icon_cry.gif

So so so bad... I don't even want to make figures with it because they'd be close or touching the cake! I honestly cannot believe they sell that stuff. Wilton has GOT to know how horrible it is but they still sell it. I just don't get it.

I had bought a huge box of it for my daughter's wedding cake. After tasting it couldn't get to the trash fast enough.

One thing I noticed when I used it to cover a cake, was that the doughy flavor of the fondant crept into my buttercream. I put white chocolate bc on the cake, and laid the fondant over it. Once I tasted it and realized how gross it was, I took the fondant off to at least eat the cake. And the BC tasted just like the fondant!

Something to be wary of....

Oh, I'm all for buying it. It does have it's uses, but covering a cake that's meant to be consumed isn't one of them thumbs_up.gif

Yes, I also didn't like the taste of Wilton Fondant. For some reason I thought there was a fishy-taste to it. Did anymore else experience this? Or am I just crazy? LOL.

How much does SATIN ICE usually cost, and where can you buy it?

icon_lol.gif That's hilarious - and exactly right!

You'd think by now that Wilton would have gotten wind of all the negative feedback they get about the taste of their fondant. I wonder why they don't work on it?

It has a really chemically taste to it. I don't like the taste of it but I find i's A great consistency to practice new techniques. I use Virgin Ice Fondant for my cakes.

If you are really curious about the taste buy a small box of the fondant. If you don't like it at least you can use it to practice with.

Wilton fondant... BAAADDDD... The first time I bought some, I was so excited because I thought "hey, now I'll be able to make really professional looking cakes and everyone will just be amazed".. I didn't even bother to taste it while I was using it (i was making a rubik's cube cake and needed it for all the tiles). it wasn't until i was at the party and noticed everyone peeling off the square (i thought, maybe it's too sweet) so i bite into my cake and EWWWW.. I thought i was going to throw up - it was HORRIBLE! it's stiff and hard to work with in my opinion. just can't believe they call that edible. i've made my own MMF before, and wasn't thrilled with it. i now use satin ice (i ordered in online once, but have since found this neat little (and i mean LITTLE) bake shop about 20 minutes from me that carries it and if she doesn't have a color (or the chocolate) she'll order it for me). i may try making my own again, but not the MMF - i've read rave reviews of Michele Foster's fondant, so i'm going to give that a try this summer.
