Thank you for tolerating my stupidity, but I don't know how to do the picture thing. My son keeps promising to show me......but. I got my punch at Michaels for 50% off. It only punches a straight line. I don't think it would work for the cupcake wrappers. Is it my imagination, or did you bobwonderbuns change your image? Are you a man or a woman ( not that that matters )

It's this one http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1813,147184-227206,00.html
VERY easy!!!! It domed perfectly, I like to have the tops dome so I preheat the oven at 400 and bake at 350. It made 12 perfect cupcakes.

That recipe is really similar to the recipe I tried a few months ago, yours has less butter (probably a good thing, lol!). Gosh, I really need to make banana cuppies again. Their so yummy!

I wanted to ask you guys about ideas for things to bake, or just activities in general, for the girls I babysit. Their mother wants me to come a few times a week instead of one since their out of school, and I'm really not a "thrown 'em in front of the TV" type of person. We made marshmallows a few weeks ago (the girls LOVED watching them get all puffy) and orange dreamsicle cupcakes last week. I brought a few colors and only a few decorating tips, but they had so much fun decorating their cupcakes. Each girl got her two favorite colors of icing, and it was just super cute. Wait, off topic, anywho, good ideas for things to bake or do with the girls? They are 9 and 12.

sayhellojana - some suggestions

* homemade pretzels
* homemade play-doh
* homemade pizzas or pizzas made using biscuits or English muffins
* depending on the age of the children you/they could make Stone Soup and maybe include the storybook
* a flying saucer with a veggie martian (did this with my 7yr old grandson)

What ages are the children? I might change some of these suggestions based on their ages.

Here are a few other ideas of things to make with kids. Not all are baking, but they should be fun...

Jello jigglers
pancakes
rice krispy treats (you can jazz them up or make different colors)
popcorn balls http://www.verybestbaking.com/recipes/detail.aspx?ID=32196
caramel dipped apples
chocolate dipped strawberries

haha too bad I didn't come up with anything very healthy for the kids! Good luck!

Hi everyone! I'm Alison and I am relatively new to CC, but have found it to be a great place with super friendly people.

Anyone mind if I join in on this thread too? I would love to learn from everyone and share anything I may have to add, but I think it will mostly be learning at this point icon_biggrin.gif

sayhellojana - here's one I've wanted to try with my grandson.

Making Cheese

Heat 1 gal milk (not ultrapasteurized) slowly to just boiling, stirring frequently to prevent scalding.

Add ½ C of an acid (lemon juice or white vinegar).

Stir gently, remove from heat. Let mixture sit for 10 minutes until curds settle below the liquid (whey).

Pour mixture into a cheesecloth-lined colander to separate curds from whey. Once mixture is cool enough to handle, use the cloth to squeeze remaining moisture from solids. Discard liquid.

Unwrap the seese and place in a bowl. Mix with ½ tsp salt or to taste.

Crumble cheese on salad, pizza, pasta, or tacos. For an appetizer, knead mixture by hand until smooth, shape into a thick log and roll in herbs to coat (such as herbs de Provence). Cover in waxed paper and then plastic wrap. Chill for an hour then slice into rounds. Serve with thin crisps/craclers/

There are a lot of kids cooking books out there. Borrow a couple from a library and create a calendar of things to do. Something for Flag day--something for the longest day of the year, something for the 4th of July etc.

It's fun to take time to anticipate and plan what will be baked and created next.

Ohhh you could do a Christmas in July theme--

I love the ideas that everyone posted here. I may borrow a few.

I did a yellow mix for mine with a banana cream pudding mix, & put in some LorAnn's banana cream oil, just a couple of drops. Yours looks easier, lol!

I use this banana cake recipe from recipezaar. It has 5 star review from 501 people!

Jana, I know that my Grandkids just like to make anything they get to mix. They love stirring in things and cracking eggs. Also it would be cute if you got them little aprons to wear. They feel like they're really into it then! They also like to make the swirls on the cupcakes. I dump a bunch of sprinkles of all kinds in little bowls and they can pick all the ones they want to sprinkle on.

They like to make bracelets and necklaces too with the beads.

Take over your cookie cutters and let them cut out all kinds of shapes!

Has anyone ever tried doing a Rhubarb cuppy? I'm in WI, so my garden is just barely starting out. Heck it was just finally warm enough to plant seeds last week. But the rhubarb is going crazy. I have my standard strawberry rhubarb crisp kinda thing, but thought about experimenting with a cuppy.

Good idea Snowflake! We had talked about it but it didn't get any further. I copied a few cake recipes but haven't developed them into a cupcake yet. We talked about making it kind of pie like otherwise it might end up like a muffin type. Or maybe making the filling or frosting with the rhubarb. Like a rhubarb cream filling.
Let us know what you come up with! icon_smile.gif

Ohhh, grandma you just gave me an idea. I'm not sure I can explain it right though since I looked at the wilton site and couldn't find a picture. But in the Wilton cupcake book, they have a decorating design to make a pie looking cuppy. Normal cupcake/normal size baked in jumbo cups. Topped with a pie filling, and then buttercream piped "pie strips" across the top to give that look of a pie. Anyways, what if we did that with rhubarb. Made a strawberry/rhubarb pie filling, placed it on top of a spice cuppy? in a jumbo holder and then piped buttercream pie strips across the top.

thanks for all the ideas, girls! They are 9&12. Homemade pizza would be lots of fun, and thats you know, nutritional, so I wouldn't feel like all I do is sugar em' up. I LOVE the idea of making their own Aprons, GrandmaG! I've got tshirt squeezy paints around here somewhere, I bet two little aprons at Michael's would only be a few bucks... awesome! The girls are going to have lots of fun icon_smile.gif

Chass - I've always made my own red. It sounds scary, but I've honestly never had a problem. I use wilton, dye it orange first and then add red when I kneed. Never takes any longer than green or purple. You can do it icon_smile.gif

Jana- The aprons would be a great idea for that age! When my girls were in middle school and had sleepovers- we would do pillowcases with markers and they would be alot of fun-all the girls would write stuff on each others pcases.
Also -pita pizzas are great if you want something quick.

Chass- i have never seen wrappers like that! Are they some kind of nut cups but stacked??
