Hey everyone, A friend of mine is getting married and wants her cake to have ribbon around the bottom of each layer. I am not doing the cake unfortunately, but the bakery that is told her that they can't do it because the ribbon will get grease stains on it. When she asked if there was any kind of ribbon that wouldn't do this the baker said there wasn't any. I was wondering if this is true because I have seen plenty of cakes on here with ribbon on them.

Thanks

How funny, I just got an e-mail about this! It said that you have to apply wax paper to the back of the ribbon with a warm iron. That keeps the grease from coming through.
Good luck!

My sister's wedding was last weekend, and I of course checked out the cake thoroughly. She had ribbon around hers and the baker put a band of foil around the cake under the ribbon. I guess that's another alternative to the wax paper?

I saw the same thread with the was paper on the back of the ribbon. It said to iron the waxed paper on the ribbon before you put it in the cake. I say you tell your sister You can do the ribbon like she wants and see if she'll let you do the cake icon_razz.gificon_lol.gif

Will ironing on the wax paper change the color of the ribbon at all? I would think it might make it a little darker, but I've never done it. It seems like a good method.

Wax paper behind the ribbon works fine~ If you put the ribbon on the cake right before the wedding it really doesn't have time to soak up the grease. Depends on what kind of ribbon you have. But yes, you can put ribbon on cakes. That baker must not do many cakes.. ribbons on cakes are very popular right now, has been for several years~ thumbs_up.gif

Also the type of icing will make a big difference -- does she want buttercream or fondant??? You'll be safer with ribbon on fondant.

I read here on CC, that one lady puts a light coating of oil on her ribbon, before applying it to the cake.

I did a practice cake with ribbon. Wish I would have known about this first because of course the grease came through. I was so disappointed because it was a copy of a jewelry box I have.

Hmmm oil... wouldn't that make a bigger mess then buttercream? icon_confused.gif That would come through fast

well i have used ribbon several times. What I do is put shortening on my fingers and run the ribbon through them. It works great. I have not gotten any spots.

But won't that also make the color of the ribbon darker? I think it would make a difference if you were trying to color match, kwim?

So do you buy your ribbon a shade lighter than what you want to end up with?
