My children and I collect outdated wallpaper books for homeschool projects and just plain ol' scissor fun. Looking at all the pretty patterns plus all the cute, whimsical ones got me thinking that they could make pretty nice cakeboard covers to go along with a theme cake or elegant cake! I'm going to try it out!

Most are vinyl and washable so I think they'd be fine. . . anyone have any thoughts on this?

Not sure, but you could always cover them with food safe cellophane (sp) it's clear and cheap!

Just to be safe about the food-safe issue, I'd cover them in clear contact paper....sturdier than cellophane and food-safe.

BTW - do you just go to a wallpaper store and ask for their outdated books? Or do you have a "connection"?? lol

Thanks -

Jenn

You can always put clear contact paper on them-I get tissue paper that is part of a theme or color of a theme I am working and cover with the contact paper-works great with birthdays or baby things! But the wallpaper idea is a great idea-some of the books are quite large so the sheets would cover some of the board nicely! What a great idea!

I find that most wallpaper stores are happy to get rid of their books so I just walk in and ask. Usually they have the expiration date written on the book spine or just inside the cover. Occasionally they have already promised their books to nursery schools or classrooms, but even then they can usually find book to give me.

Thanks for the great idea! My Grandma's business is Wall Papering and Painting. I will have to sweet talk her into keeping left over pieces from jobs for me.

As I said, I work for a Home Builder, and when I called our wallpaper store yesterday after reading these posts with this wonderful idea, they told me to stop by and pick up as many books as I want! They said they do sometimes get requests for the old books from teachers or daycare centers, but most of the books just get thrown away! I got 8 books yesterday! And they told me to call anytime I needed more! HOORAY! I found a GREAT one for a cake I'm doing 2 weeks from now, I'm so excited!

Great idea on the wallpaper for cake cardboards. I'm going to call a local paint store near by home. Thanks for your sharing that great idea and anyone else who participated. icon_smile.gif

Vinyl wallpaper is perfectly safe to use without having to cover it with contact paper. I have done this before many times, just make sure that if it is the kind that is pre-glued, that you don't leave any of the glue backing exposed underneath because if it gets wet, it will get goopy. After attaching it to the board, make sure you wash it with a clean cloth and soap and water and wipe dry.

Another idea is to use the coloured plastic table cloths that you can buy at the dollar store. Not as pretty or varied as the wallpaper idea but it's cheap, waterproof/greaseproof, and comes in almost every colour of the rainbow.
