Can anyone give me any tips on making a cake plateu? I've heard of tile and wood from Home Depot, but how much bigger does it have to be in comparison with the cake itself?

How do I transport the bottom layer onto the cake board without ruining it?

And how do I prepare the board so that it doesn't ruin the cake? (i.e. cloth wrinkles would cause friction for the cake that would hence make it crumble down into just that- crumbs).

The cake board should be at least 2 inches larger than the cake.

The cake should have a board under it, the same size as the cake. that will allow the transfer.

the plateau can be covered with something smooth like clear contact papaer.

I don't know about the contact paper. I read somewhere on here that it shouldn't be used. Unless it was food safe. I have never used it so I don't know the correct answer for you. I have used press and seal to cover some fabric on a board but you could see the words on the press and seal which was a bummer. I hope you can get your answer soon.

yep what they all said..and if you use a cake board the same size as your cake...to then put on top of a decorated cake board...remember to put some glue..

I usually just hot glue some boards to give the cake some support.

they do have nice cake drums in your local cake supply shop.

When I do a large tiered cake, I always use a piece of plywood covered in fanci-foil. I like to make sure that my cake board is at least 4" larger than the cake itself. That way it leaves a nice 2" edge all the way around the cake.

I also just put the cake directly onto the fanci-foil covered cake board and I decorate it right on there. That way I don't have to worry about moving it after I have decorated it.

I have used the clear contact paper and I love it. I only use it when I am out of foil and I will then cover my plywood with regular wrapping paper and then the clear contact paper.
