I have cardboard that I use for my cake boards. I was wondering if I should cover them and with what. The Wilton paper seems too expensive to use. Any other ideas.

I use wax freezer paper. Make sure you place the slick side on the outside of the cardboard where the cake will sit. This eliminates the grease spots from your icing.

I have found an inexpensive and creative way to cover your cake boards. I have started using contact paper. Its self adhesive, wipes off easily and comes in a varity of colors. It works like a charm.

How do you get the edges smooth with Contact paper? To me, nothing ruins a beautiful cake more than a cake board that is covered but the edges are not smooth. Since Contact paper is thick, how do you make it work?

As for the Wilton paper, I buy it when either Michael's or Hobby Lobby has a 40% or more off coupon.

The contact paper is not too thick. So to get the edges smooth, for square boards, leave about an 1/2 to 1" over, make a split in each corner and fold over like you're wrapping a package. If its a round, leave about an 1/2 to 1" over, make a splits all the way around and fold overlapping until smooth. It takes a little practice but it works quite well.

Oh, I get it! Ok, that makes sense. And I bet it's a ton easier to clean icing off of too! Thanks! icon_smile.gif

Acrosstx,

You're most welcome. I read the contact paper trick on CC sometime ago and by a fluke my sister gave me a roll she had. I was in a pinch and needed to cover a large cakeboard and remembered the contact paper. Its inexpensive, large rolls and comes in a variety of colors. I have been converted! Plus when airbrushing, the contact paper is a lot easier to wipe off.

Yes I am a contact paper girl!! I also like to use just about anything and cover that with clear contact paper. It opens up the doors to scrapbook paper, wrapping paper, just about anything.

I LOVE to use wrapping paper or scrapbooking paper on my boards! I sometimes get my inspiration for the cake design from the paper!! I think it helps the cake look "finished". I have also found some clear "food safe" wrap at Hobby Lobby (by the gift wrap) that I like to use - I just cut it the same size as the wrapping paper and cover the board with both at the same time! To save money - I search the wrapping paper bins at the dollar store, and I also buy seasonal paper after the occasion because it's usually been discounted.

I think anything that I can pick up at Walmart at all hours of the night is good. I am notorious for having to do last minute cakes and you may find me in Walmart at midnight. Contact paper is always readily available. I will be a wrapper extraordinaire.

for my regular run of the mill cakes i cover my boards with aluminum foil. my boards are not much bigger than the cakes so you dont see too much of the board/foil. and for wedding cakes i buy the cake drums that are already covered.

I'm a big fan of wrapping paper and contact paper.
I also like to print images out on a regular piece of paper and use those too and cover the board with clear contact paper.
I try to avoid aluminum foil because it tears easily when you are cutting into the cake.

I'd never thought of printing images from my computer to cover boards. Hmmm....another option!

Contact paper is cheap, self adhesive and easy to work with.
