Last night my husband comes home and with a wide eyed epression says "Your cooking?!?" LOL! See usually at least friday nights I reserve for pizza or going out to eat. Anyway I am really trying to get back into this. I felt like I was really on a roll this week! So I made some nice grilled steaks, so it wasnt like i was giving up much taste wise anyway. But I probably ate a little more than I should have
! BUT then we went to our neighborhood "friday night bonfires" that we have here. People usually BYOB and bring snacks to share. I did not have anything to drink but I did find myself over at the snack table a little more than I should have. I was a little disapointed in myself last night and this morning. But back to it today!
Oh and as you can see I am not running at this moment in the 5k. My husband was sponsored to do it for work. I could have too, but for both of us to do it, we would have had to get a babysitter. I just didnt put up much of a fight LOL! Maybe next time ![]()
Amber: this is a friendly reminder. DONT EAT THE "CRAP" you bought at the grocery store! Just go get your celery and pout while your husband is eating the pizza pocket. We are losers and that is what we deserve. Ha ha!
Good luck this weekend everyone! Keep posting suggestions for snacks and meals. I already tried the cheese stick wrapped in turkey. Yum! I thought it might be even better if I went out and got some of that lettuce wrap to put on the outside. OOOooo! OR the laughing cow cheese with the turkey and lettuce!
Hi, all!
I don't have any healthy snacks to share.
Hubby and I did go to the store after the gym yesterday and buy some fruits and veggies and some snacks. Hubby got soft pretzels at 1 gram of fat per pretzel and some low fat pierogies for a snack at work. We have to work on some breakfast food. We did get meal replacement bars also from the gym. A bit grainy but not bad. Also Hubby went out and got some drinks for replacing the Coca-Cola. It is so nice that he is getting in on this with me. Of course, he is feeling those extra pounds.
Well, going to check the tape measure. I can't trust the scale.
Not that I should be preaching because lord knows I have NOT done well lately, and please dont hate me!!! But I think the sugar and carbs in the items you just mentioned are going to kill your diet more than the fat. Personally I would NOT eat the pop tarts (even though they are tasty!) and replace it with scrambled eggs or if you are in more of a hurry high fiber cereal like kashi, or oatmeal (not the quick sugary kind). Even the pretzels being low fat have so many carbs in it. You could replace it with high fiber whole grain bread. Skip the coke and try coke zero or something. I think sugar is what is making us fat. Not that we should be eating a high fat diet, but some fats are good for us. Anyway, I hope you arent offended, it is just my opinion from the various books I have read. My problem is just sticking with it.
O.K I SO SUCK!!!! I made a very large tirimisu <sp> for a friend of ours coming home party last night and let's just say it was in my lips and down my throat before I could blink! ![]()
Then I too did the steak on the grill, baked potato, and green beans. I did eat my potato with just salt and pepper though! ![]()
Then my hubby broke out the gummie lifesavers and it was down hill for me. ![]()
Geesh! But today I am making this work, I went to grocery by myself which means I skipped the candy, chips and soda isle.
So let's get this rockin girls!!!!!!
DIE FAT CELLS.......D-I-E!!!!!!!!
And Merissa dont sweat that 5k, you keep your running up and next year you
'll be our 10k hero!!!!!!!! ![]()
Bless your heart Merissa I need that friendly reminder.
Well we leave tomorrow and DH will stake claim back at the computer after he gets done washing his car so I just wanted to say have a terrific week I'll be thinking of you all as I sulk with my celery
and build sandcastles.
Die Fat Cells DIE!!!
I'm not offended, Marissa, but I do disagree with you. I realize you can't have so much sugar and the like in your diet, but to cut out an entire food group is not good for you. Especially an important food group. Your body uses carbs for fuel. Carbs are important as is some fat. I have seen so many people on low carb diets lose weight and then gain it right back. Also I have noticed that a lot of people on the high fat diets tend to keep the fat around their middle. I don't want to offend you but you are only tricking your body into using fat for fuel instead of carbs, and I would certainly be very careful about eating a lot of fat. It is just not good for you. I am also being careful not to cut out too much fat, which also is not good for you.
Moderation is the key. Low fat diets are good for you. I am trying to limit the Coke. I can't drink the Coke Zero, it has such a tase of artificial sweetener in it. I would prefer to cut out the coke all together, which I am doing.
I have had good success with low fat diets. It is only in the last few years that I have gained weight/size. About the time when I was managing a self storage facility and did nothing but sit around and eat and order out every day and had such a high fat diet it was not funny. I lost some weight with my walking (about 3 miles per day), but I am stepping up the exercise some by joining a gym. I have worked out three time this week and will try for four next week.
To be completely honest, I am not a fan of diets at all. I need to eat more healthily (is that a word?). Something I need to do is to eat breakfast so that my body has fuel. I also have no time in the morning to cook anything. I just bought the pop tarts because I hadn't gotten to the grocery store to see what I can get for breakfast before I leave for work in the morning to fuel my morning walk. I do not make a habit of eating stuff like that but since I have it I need to eat them all because I paid for it.
I will find something else for a quick breakfast soon. The Bally's that I joined has meal replacement bars that I might consider.
My snack lately has been sandwich meat and pickles. Nalley petite something or others, they're small and crunchy and soooo yummy, although I realize the sodium content isn't great.
I bought a ton of fruit from costco and made a huge fruit salad...healthy right? That is until dh loaded it with caramel and whipped cream, grrrr. He says he wants to lose weight to so wtf, I swear he seems to sabotage my efforts all the time.
Fat free/sugar free insant pudding, good for a sweet fix.
Otter - I think Quaker Oatmeal Breakfast Cookies would be a good grab-able morning food. I love them, they even have chocolate chip ones. I'm not sure of the nutritous value but I do know they have 4 or 5 grams of fiber in each one which I believe and don't quote me on this, that fiber helps process the sugar carbs slower so they don't get all turned into fat or something like that. Pleas someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyhow I love those things, I usually only buy them when they're on sale.
I totally forgot to weigh in on thursday. I'm still surprisingly maintaining. I haven't been eating great or exercising still....bad me. I just need to get a routine going and I should be good, for whatever reason starting is the hard part.
No goals for me, I'm just going to try!
Starting is always the hard part of anything.
I think you are right about the fiber. I am going to look into something more nutritious than the pop tarts. I can't believe how expensive it is to eat right. Or how time consuming.
The trainer at the Ballys said that you should eat five times a day. Easy for her to say, she is not stuck behind a desk all day. The entire trick is to stabilize the sugar in your blood.
I need to go down to have breakfast now, as a matter of fact. I can't believe how hungry I've been since starting to eat something. Now I get hungry in the morning when I get up and again for lunch and at dinner. So my body is starting to burn the calories I give it now.
Have a great day!
Otter, I am glad you are not offended whew! LOL! It is fine for us to disagree, and that is what this is for, for us to get new ideas. I am totally open to new ideas and you bring up some very good points. We had a big discussion around here awhile back (I think before you joined us) about "dieting" and if it was really good for us, There was a lot of disagreement, but it brought up a lot of different points of view that were interesting. Though I do want to make myself clear. I am not talking about cutting out carbs. I am talking about choosing the right carbs. I am not talking about the atkins diet that you eliminate virtually all carbs and eat foods high in saturated fats. I am speaking of cutting back on the sugar and carbs from like white pasta and white bread. Those things can be replaced with good carbs like fruits and vegetables, whole wheat pasta, high fiber cereal, whole wheat bread. The fiber in these things slow down the absorption of the sugar from the carbs (unlike their white counterparts) and well, that is supposed to be good so they say! I am not advocating a high fat diet in anyway. I was thinking more like getting fats from lean meat and some low fat cheese and extra virgin olive oil, not like from the greasy chicken strips and french fries (oh how much I love those!) I think a lot of us get pulled to the packages at the store that say "low fat" but there often times there is literally no fiber and a ton of sugar. I just dont think eating it is really doing us any favors. That is my idea of a "diet". And I know we all with have different ideas. I do agree though, moderation is the key.
Healthy snacks..... is there such a thing?
I like the Honey Nut Special K bars, and sometimes a handful of small pretzels with these cheddar jack "tiles" I found at Target. Or half a toasted whole wheat bagel with a tbsp of PB. I just discovered that the Dark Chocolate Dreams flavor from the Peanut Butter Co has 10 less calories and only 1g fat more than the reduced fat Jiff, and it's chocolate! Guess which one wins?
But, as far as healthy goes, nothing beats fresh fruit for me, especially a crisp apple. Though Red Globe grapes and Ranier cherries run a very close second.
Otter, my new favorite breakfast are the Kashi Go Lean cereals. One cup with some low fat/non fat milk and fresh fruit (I pref raspberries) is satisfying in a very subtle manner, and gives me a good energy boost in the morning.
Have fun making sandcastles Rambo; all that constructing has got to count as excercise, no? ![]()
I'm in your boat 2sdae! I wanted to try the WASC and wanted to try making a peach raspberry filling yesterday. I figured it'd be safe, since my sister and her friends came to swim, so I knew I could pawn most of it off on them. However, I flavored the BC with Creme Royal, and couldn't keep my fingers out of it.
There is still some leftovers on my counter.... calling my name... ![]()
Plus, who can resist a good Tiramisu? mmmmm tiramisu.... ![]()
Merissa, you make me laugh, in a good way, cause you sound like my parents when they started the SBD!
LOL! Well they pay me....no, seriously I do like the SBD book, but I also find the dr. phil book (which is pretty similar as far as food choices goes) and Body for Life book really helpful.
I did not intend to imply that I eat the way I described all the time though, if I did I wouldnt be in this group! LOL! What I was trying to say is that I think a lot of these food companies give us a false notion that something is a good choice or perhaps even healthy when they slap a "low fat or fat free" label on the package, when if fact they are just loaded with sugar/carbs.
I am sorry, I did not mean to sound like an advertisement or that I was pushing a specific diet. Sometimes what I thinking doesnt come out the way I intend, and I am sorry if I offended anyone.
Anyway I will just go back to me celery now!
O.K Here it is another Monday and another week to kick some fat cell booty!
It's kinda over cast here so I think i'll do breakfast and send my DH off to work while I finagle the 2 1/2 and 1 1/2 year olds to put on their shoes and let's go for a walk to hunt some birds and worms!!! ![]()
![]()
![]()
Keeps them interested in walking and I can almost manage a full walk with out incident!
well, hopefully! ![]()
So walk, water, eat, and walk and water and eat well! <make sign out of an index card and put this on my fridge, mirrors and cabinet with the badies inside.....see badies not goodies........you gotta convince yourself you don't like those "badies"!!!!! Or I should say, I do! ![]()
So up and out ladies......new week less fat to coral! ![]()
DIE FAT CELLS.....D-I-E!!!!!!!
Marissa, I am so glad that you are not cutting all carbs out of your diet. It worries me when I hear somebody doing that. I am actually not a fan of any fad diet, just moderation and being sensible about your intake of fat, etc.
I have a busy week ahead of me. I sure hope that I remember to eat. I am glad that I at least have Thursday off to get some things done. I have to get the outside and the inside of the house in shape for this weekend. It is my daughter's commencement ceremony and I have no idea how many people will be coming for dinner and the ceremony. I also will be making a cake for Sunday. Then next month is her going away party and another cake. I sure hope there is someone around who can eat these cakes. I am not a big cake eater myself. I also don't eat many fried foods. I don't really like french fries. Maybe the occasional onion ring.
Have a good day, all!
okay while I was in the shower I thought of a challenge for the rest of the week. A game if you will....I call it "FORBIDDEN FOODS" game. So everyone who wants to play needs to come up with at least one food item that they will forbid themselves to eat this week. It should be something that is a temptation. Then you create your CONSEQUENCE. So if you eat your forbidden food then your consequence is x.
Here is mine:
Forbidden foods: All desserts (especially since i have some brownies sitting on the counter and ice cream in the freezer. This will be hard for me), pizza, chips of any kind. Edited to add french fries!
Consequence: The following day I will need to get a minimum of 30 extra minutes of exercise.
Well I lost at my own game. The brownie got the best of me. Not a huge brownie, but some all the same. Guess I will need to get my butt outta bed tomorrow early!
I did Atkins and and now on my own Atkins-South Beach kinda' plan. The thing that a lot of people don't understand because they get caught in the hype, Atkins (or South Beach) isn't about completely eliminating carbs, and it's not anti-vegetable. I eat more veggies while on the diet than at any other time. Lots of diabetes in my family, low carb no sugar (okay, next to no sugar) just makes sense for my world. Some people just process the carbs differently than others. I think the key is in addressing the matter with your doctor and going about any diet wisely.
My forbidden food: Peppermint Patties. I cannot walk by one without looking longingly at it.
I am winning the Coke battle. For now.
My consequence: Walk the 135 steps up the hill across from my house THREE TIMES IN A ROW! That ought to keep me from eating one of those delicious little things.
O.K I some how lost all my posting from yesterday? ![]()
I know they were here because I re read them!
oh, well.
Basically I didn't cheat at all yesterday, but it was not a healthy day for me either. I was very sick to my stomach with an ulcer that gives me problems so 1 bowl of cereal is all I had yesterday. That and lots of water.
I did walk early or I wouldn't have walked at all.
So I guess my yesterday doesn't really count being sick and all.
But today does and I am going to keep on keeping on!!!!!!
Great challenge yesterday by the way! ![]()
I had my post stating what my weakness was but those were avoided due to yuckiness in my belly.
We are in that process of going up that hill ladies, and you know what happens when you stop on a hill.
Your stuck on the side of a hill, that's what! ![]()
So keep truckin on and look at far you've come, not how far you have to go.
DIE YOU STINKIN FAT CELLS.....D-I-E!!!!
Well I made good on my exercise this morning. So I think I have burned off that delicious brownie! I am still keeping the challenge for this week...so keep playing if you can!
Okay today's challenge. Seems like a lot of us complain about being so busy, so let's think of some ideas and suggestions for quick and healthy meals and snacks for those of us on the go.
I like the egg substitute that comes in the carton. Not that making scrambled eggs takes THAT long, but it trims a couple of minutes off preparation and it can be done in just minutes. A little more expensive than regular eggs, but it lasts me almost a week for just under $2. Plus less fat and calories.
Kashi cereal is great. Loaded with fiber! Cereal is always a time saver.
I have had those quaker breakfast cookies, they are pretty good, and have some fiber in them.
I also buy the bagged lettuce when it is on sale (again a little more expensive) but I am much more likely to eat a salad when I dont have to get all the lettuce out. I know, I sound lazy. I top it with leftover grilled chicken or steak from the night before (make a little extra for leftovers!) or diced ham or chicken or turkey.
mozzeralla cheese sticks, lowfat yogurt, cottage cheese, fruit, carrot sticks. Just grab and go for quick snack.
Good morning everyone!! Sorry I missed out on the healthy snacks challenge...I love this time of year because I LOVE watermelon. I realize it's fairly high in sugar, but the diruretic effect justifies it for me! My favorite snacks are low fat cottage cheese, rice cakes, low fat cheese and green olives and dill pickles. Bad for the sodium, but better than chips when that salty craving hits!!
Tuesday, yesterday counts, even if you were feeling sick. (Hope you're better today!!) It stinks that you were feeling bad, but at least you weren't feeling bad AND blowing your diet.
My forbidden food for the week is going to be chips/sweets/snack foods after dinner. If I MUST eat in the evening, it HAS to be something healthy, like fruit or cottage cheese. The consequence... well, I can't think of one right now, I'll report back if those goodies get the best of me.
I bought whole grain tortillas and keep low fat cheese and left over chicken or shrimp and you can snatch them up and roll up any snack to go. I like turkey bacon with lettuce and tomato personally in the summer.
I also freeze water and crystal light in water bottles to re use. I'll freeze them to take along and keep cold when we have something to do say at a park or picnic places I usually fall short of remembering to drink my water.
Keep veggies to munch on pre cut in small snack bags so I can reach in fridge and just grab and go.
My quick meal is a stir fry. If you use frozen veggies there is not even much cutting to do. I sometimes even skip the meat.
Also, if I am in a real hurry I will scramble an egg or boil one.
Oh I thought of something else I buy frequently are these tortillas like Tuesday mentioned. The kind I like are made by La Tortilla Factory I think and they are usually found near the health foods. They have...get this..12 grams of fiber in the large tortilla and I think maybe only 80 calories. They taste pretty good to me and they last a very long time in th fridge. I use them as a replacement to bread usually for a sandwich wrap or fajitas etc.
Speaking of tortillas, I buy mission barb balance whole wheat burrito style. 200 cals. 45 from fat. 21g of fibre and 8g of protein.
I like soy crips ( not sure if I mentioned that one ), bbq is my favorite flavour, a little spendy $2.5 for a small bag ( i could get such a big bag of doritos for that but doritos made me fat! ).
Shelly - I love watermelon too!!!! Especially rose's watermelon maritini mix ![]()
Merissa - You do not at all sound lazy. I hate making salad. I don't know why it doesn't take me that long and they are so yummy. For salad's I LOVE Newman's own low fat dressings, especially the sesame ginger one. I don't even care for ranch on salad anymore!
Okay, so the weight loss fairy does exist....I haven't seen her but I am losing weight!!! Seriously I feel like at the rate I'm going I should be gaining.
What should I stay away from....hmmmm, I'm going to say sweet stuff. I'm making my first cookie bouqets and 5 ribbon cakes for my fundraiser on Friday so lots of baking. No licks, bites or tastes. My consequence, walking up and down the huge hill twice ( so that would be like four times, cuz I mean up and down on both sides!! )
ooo that sesame ginger dressing is MY favorite too! I like to add some sliced almonds into my salad too. Gotta make the salad exciting.
For my last challenge as the reining cheerleader I thought we could come up with some ideas to keep us from unnecessary eating:
*chewing gum
*Sometimes when I really think I need a snack, a drink will do. A big glass of water or maybe even some diet pop (I try to think of it as a treat!) or I like those coffee drinks that are sugar free
*staying outside. Yesterday I set up a whole oasis in the yard for the kids. I packed them a little lunch, set up the pool and got out all their toys, set up a nice lounge chair for me. They had so much fun, and I just enjoyed laying there for once. Except my poor baby could have drown
! I ran up to shut the door since my kids are contantly leaving it open and when I looked back my little one had slid down the slide in there and was struggling under water! I mean it couldnt have been more than 5 or 10 seconds, but it scared me so much how fast it can happen. Sorry that was a side note.
*At night for me relaxing is just watching TV. So what goes better with TV? snacks. So sometimes I will just watch TV in my bedroom to avoid being so close to the kitchen.
Other ideas??
Wow, I haven't been here in a day or so & missed a lot! My healthy snack of choice is a Granny Smith apple (I love the tartness), and the best part is that DD loves them too and will ask for one when she sees me with mine. I also like the mini flavored rice cakes - the apple cinnamon ones are sweet, so they satisfy that craving. I just need to count how many I eat and stick to the serving size.
I also hate making salads! I buy the bagged lettuce too because if I just get a head of lettuce, it'll go bad before I bother doing anything with it.
I love the oatmeal squares for breakfast, but I won't let myself buy them because I can never eat just one
Kind of defeats the purpose, huh?
I haven't done too bad this week, but not too good either. No cake or cookies, but lots of snacking. I already know I'm going to have a bad day today because DH wants to go to IHOP (whenever he gets up, that is
). They do have a fruit bowl there, but I really can't stomach paying whatever they're charging for a teeny bowl of fruit that may or may not be fresh/ripe.
Extra treadmill tonight!!!!!
-Lisa
oh and dont forget everyone that today is 'no cheat wednesday!' Weigh in day looms near.....
O.K. I totally agree with the outside distractions! We bought a pool for the kids and they love it, but I need a lawn chair for me to sit on because for some reason I only bought those sitting straight up kind without thinking! ![]()
Like I will want to sit straight up in sun, let me bathe myself with spf and soak up some much needed rays of vitamin D!
Now I have noticed if I start out with juice to drink and whole wheat toast with polaner's all fruit and a cheese stick I am able to control my morning and mid afternoon with just water. The fruit and bread and cheese really stick to me and I feel like I've eaten something I want! That is the key to snacking for me, having at least something that I wanted in the first place.
Ok. ladies it's no cheat wed! Weigh in is tomorrow, so let's work off some unwanted ugly fat cells and hike up them sagging arms and thighs and just "MOVE IT" TODAY! ![]()
P.S. Merissa I know how you feel about things happening quick with kids! Just breathe and relax knowing your little one was watched out for! ![]()
P.S. Merissa I know how you feel about things happening quick with kids! Just breathe and relax knowing your little one was watched out for!
okay so now I just avoided another disaster with this little one. He is frequenly pulling chairs up to the counter to get into the cabinet with the fruit snacks...
! Anyway I saw it happening, but I couldnt get there in time. He fell from the counter to the floor. The kitchen island blocked my view so I couldnt see how he landed. My thought was that he was going to land on his head. It was a huge thump. He cried for a minute or two...no blood, teeth still intact. He walked back over to the chair, and started climbing BACK onto the counter to get those fruit snacks. Now that is a kid who really wants his snacks! LOL!!
Okay I better get off this computer now before my child is seriously injured. We are going to the beach today with my mom...gotta get into the swim suit....ack. I think I am most embarrassed around my mom. My mom has always eaten in moderation and has stayed pretty trim. She's certainly not fanatical, not super skinny, but I think we are probably about the same size, though I am sure she weighs less than me. Anyway I hate feeling like she is thinking I am getting heavy. She never says anything, but I know weight has always been really important to her. I guess I will cover up with my beach pants LOL!
Let's be losers today!
I think I am most embarrassed around my mom.
I'm the same way, Merissa, but for a different reason. My mom has always been heavy, and she just loves it when I gain weight. It's like she has company. She starts getting all sympathetic and trying to share clothes with me (which is ridiculous, she's a good 50 lbs heavier than me), but she's really trying to sabotage me because she doesn't want to be the heavy one in the family. Not a very nice way for a mom to act!! So I will NEVER NEVER admit to her how much I have actually gained or what size clothes I wear!! It's like there's a little gremlin inside her cheering "my daughter is fat!! hooray!!"
I'm ready to be a loser today!! Let's do it, ladies!!
He cried for a minute or two...no blood, teeth still intact. He walked back over to the chair, and started climbing BACK onto the counter to get those fruit snacks.
Oh, that's too funny (since he wasn't actually hurt, that is
) My son would do the exact same thing. He fell down the stairs when he was 3 & broke his arm. The next day, after he got his nice bright green cast on, I took pictures of him to send to my in-laws. Of course in the pictures I took, he's standing on the arm of a chair in my bedroom preparing to take a flying leap across the room onto my bed. My FIL cracked up and said "look at what he's doing!"
Shellie - your mom sounds like quite the piece of work. My mom is like Merissa's - has always eaten healthy & has always been thin. She has always encouraged me to diet & lose weight, and for a while it was really annoying. As if I want to be fat
But now that I'm actively trying to lose weight, she is very supportive but not in an overbearing way. (not yet, anyway)
