I do hun, and we still get good ol' bad for ya shortening.
Personally, I just find it appalling that we as a country have been lulled into stupidity. Now I know that there are lots of smart people out there but most people are on this "healthy" craze because it's what "everyone else" is doing. The same ol' peer pressure thing that we all dreaded in Jr. High and High school.
We, unfortunately live in a society that reinforces the "mob" mentality (democrat, demos, mob). "It can't be all bad if the media says everyone is doing it?!"
So, let's all get pet black widow spiders n let the kids play with em n drink juice from nightshade berries because some magazine says it's ok to do so. See where I'm going with this?
We've become so dependant upon the media and hold what they say to be the gospel truth that we've forgotten how to think for ourselves and have lost our way.
I do think that as a community of decorators that we do have a voice, however small it may be, but a voice non-the-less. We need to shout from the rooftops that we are not going to take the legislating of our livelihoods (in some cases) away from us.
I haven't a clue where to start but something needs to be done, next thing you know, we will have twinkee totin grannies selling contraband on the streetcorner like common criminals.
Devil's advocate:
Trans fats are chemically altered and are bad for you. WHY?
Because fats are used to make up cellular walls in your body. The cellular walls allow things IN to your cells and allow things OUT of your cells.
Trans fats (this is a medical term) "screw up" your cells' ability to do their job and research suggests that it may actually cause some cells to become cancerous.
So...how good is that frosting tasting? I hope it tastes THAT good!!
BTW, research is now linking high fructose corn syrup to diabetes (it's estimated that HALF of all U.S. children born in 2001 will develop diabetes) and to your body not feeling "full" so, thereby, to obesity as well.
In the 1950s, adults consumed almost NONE of this stuff because we were all, ahem, cooking meals from scratch. Now the average adult American consumes SIXTY THREE pounds of it a year. Gee...I wonder why we're all so fat????
Guess what kind of sugar is in your favorite "diet" cookies??? Yeah, you guessed it. Those "diet" cookies are making you fatter!!!!
Disclaimer: I made a cake this week with the new Crisco and, yeah, it acts funny and, yeah I was too cheap to buy butter. I also added some corn syrup to something today and happened to read the label for the first time and wasn't surprised to see that it contains HFCS (duh, right). So...we're all learning and none of us are perfect but God bless Crisco for at least trying....

Whoa, don't want everyone scared here. There are studies upon studies that can supposedly prove anyone's point of view. Here is a direct quote from Wikipedia:
Cancer: There is no scientific consensus that consumption of trans fats significantly increases cancer risks across the board.[26] The American Cancer Society states that a relationship between trans fats and cancer "has not been determined."[32] However, one recent study has found connections between trans fat and prostate cancer.[33]
Here is the bottom line and what has been proven, a diet high in any kind of fat and low in fresh fruits and veggies and a sedentary lifestyle (no exercise) will increase your risk of all health problems including heart disease and cancer. All these studies and their results are often used to push a certain point of view.
The fact is that we live longer on average than we ever have. Are more people, including children, fat? Yes, but is that a problem of the food industry or a problem of society. I am sure the arguments are numerous, but no one that I know of in this country has Krispy Kremes forced down their throat. People have to take responsibility for their own choices. I don't believe it is the government's job to regulate our lives or our eating habits.
So trans fat may be bad for you but so is drinking alcohol and I don't see anyone banning that? If I eat trans fat I'm only hurting myself but if I get drunk and drive, I can kill innocent people but no one is banning alcohol. Why?
Dueter, I was going to tell you that you have oil puddles around your cakes because you are from Texas
but I have oil slicks coming out of my cakes too
Solution, I found Walmart Veg Shortening with TRANS FAT! Yes, real artery clogging trans fat and it worked beautifully.
Here is my letter that I just wrote to Crisco:
I read your page about decorating cakes with the new Crisco. All your research and testing just doesn't wash. Let's be realistic. Zero trans fat means a lower melting point, plain and simple. Your new Crisco doesn't work and cake decorators hate it. Watch your sales numbers and see if they tell the story. In the past, every cake decorator I know has always been told, use only Crisco for your icing, never store brands. You had a reputation with us cake decorators and a good one. All your talk of testing and recipes and research is meaningless when my icing slides off the cake as it is driven down the road. And that was using a modified recipe to compensate for the "New Crisco". Basically you are trying to convince us of something that isn't true. New Crisco is not old Crisco and just doesn't work the same no matter how hard you try to convince yourself or us. Sorry, you lost my business. Multiply the 2 six pound cans a month I use (as a recreational cake decorator) by 1000's. I do hope your business feels the pinch of lost sales. I could go into a long discussion of what happens when the government starts interfereing in every aspect of our life but I think you know that government has no place telling us what to eat or what a company can produce. You know you have loyal customers who are demanding a product yet refuse to make it. What a sad state this free country has come to.
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very well stated! ![]()
personally, if I wanted to eat a healthy fat free, sugar free cake, I'd eat a stick of celery. I want cake to taste like cake, not like it's doing wonders for my arteries. I diet enough during the week, if I want a Krispy Kreme, I should be allowed to have one ![]()
Chaptips, I'm not sure I understand. It's awfully early in the morning for me to be focusing, but did you imply that Democrats have a mob mentality. Surely we aren't bring politics on CC.
Frankandcathy, so glad that you can also tell me what is and isn't good for me. I think at 58 years of age I can figure that out on my own. I figure the sugar alone is bad for me.........
CathysCC, alcohol in moderation will not hurt you. Someone who drinks and drives is an idiot and it has nothing to do with trans fat. It amazes me how people compare things.
Guess I woke up on the defensive this morning. Sorry.
Diane
LOL. Certainly causes a ruckus, doesn't it, when you tell people WHY things are bad for them.
Please, please. I was giving a bit of a tongue in cheek response.
I used to eat the stuff myself for heaven's sake (when they were selling it)!!!!

Wait, wait. One more thing:
When you read the warning on an alcohol bottle or a pack of cigarettes do you yell at it and tell it that you are ____ years old and can make your decisions yourself, thank you very much???
ROFL.
~C
You don't even want to get me started about the warning labels on things. I rate those right up there with the ones on a cup of coffee. "Warning, this coffee is hot." DUH.................I didn't ask for iced coffee. I'm old enough to make my decisions on cigarettes and alcohol without their warnings.
Diane
Thoughts on the topic:
Warning labels? Except for those on medications or on kitchen appliances that say "do not imurse in water'" most are the product of our legal system. ![]()
Crisco being "fat?" It is vegitable fat, not animal fat (which is lard) and big difference when it comes to health and digestion. ![]()
Store brands of shorting? Only had to try once to notice the difference in color and taste. I love my white icing (colors are better).
Crisco's suggestion to add marangue powder? ALREADY DO THAT
THEIR NEW PRODUCT MAY BE GOOD FOR FRYING BUT NOT FOR ICING!!!! ![]()
Whew, glad to get that off my chest.... thank you for letting me rant... I am going to get my cupcakes started for my Girl Scout troop for tomorow and have a couple of glasses of wine ![]()
By the way, I was watching the food network last Sunday and saw one of thier cooks (not chef) on their show about desserts icing cupcakes with ROYAL ICING!! Who ices cupcakes with royal icing? Dries hard, if you manage to get your teeth to crack thru it crumbles to the floor....
Honestly, the things you see on tv.....
Some of the things mentioned here-cancer, heart disease, etc., are also in some people's genes. My grandmother and her brother have heart disease-so did their parents. My grandmother also had breast cancer and she did survive, but now she is on all kinds of medication-I wouldn't doubt at least 20 pills or more a day-medicine for her heart, stomach, liver, etc., etc. and she still has problems. So chances are, I could get the breast cancer and heart disease, too, even if I did eat right and exercise every day like I should-some people just can't help it. But, if you don't eat right or exercise, it is likely you're going to have problems sooner or later.
Also, I agree that the government is trying to run our lives in some way or another-our religion rights are slowly being taken away, homosexuality is trying to take over (not to offend anyone), immigrants are being given rights that we would probably never have gotten, welfare and social security is given to practically anybody now, whether they really need it or not. I have a friend who is getting social security checks because she is "disabled" with her back, yet she does everything around the house-mow the grass, move the furniture in her house, etc. She even has a handicapped thingie to put on her rearview mirror so she can get a handicapped parking space at the store-makes me sick. There are so many others out there who really are handicapped and can never find the parking spot because so many "handicapped"-whether they have the rearview thingie or not-are in the handicapped parking spaces. Anyway, I hope that the next president will be able to turn some things around, but it can only be done with God in control. Sorry to get off subject a little, just had to vent. ![]()
So trans fat may be bad for you but so is drinking alcohol and I don't see anyone banning that? If I eat trans fat I'm only hurting myself but if I get drunk and drive, I can kill innocent people but no one is banning alcohol. Why?
They tried banning alcohol with the Eighteenth Amendment. It actually caused more people to drink more heavily and caused more problems crime-wise than it solved. The Twenty-First Amendment repealed Prohibition nearly 15 years later. Maybe the government should take a lesson out of their own books and keep their noses out of our dinner plates.
formerbuckeye: OHG - LOL, not an issue for me. Ya gotta check my cakes! Not one plain 'ol white icing in the bunch!
HaaaaaaaHaaaaaaaaa. I see what you mean. No plain icings for you indeed! Very nicely done.
Sandra
Cassie, I totally agree with you and I am glad we are getting to vent here. When we start to get away from what the original foundation of our country was about, freedom under God, I feel we are moving closer to socialism. I got an email today, part of which said ,"I am thankful for all the complaining I hear about the government, because it means we have freedom of speech." Please let us all remember that as we vent ![]()
In defense of myself, I only brought up the point of alcohol because it is an example of s substance that can cause damage, yet it is not being attacked or banned. Even cigarettes cause harm (I don't believe the second hand smoke theory, no flaming please) only to those who smoke them and smoking is attacked and banned in so many places.
How many substances do you know of except illegal drugs and alcohol that hurt innocent people? Yet, trans fat, I repeat, only hurts the person who eats it. I don't think that I made an invalid comparison at all.
I was not making a statement against drinking as some of you assumed.(though I don't drink myself) but a statement about the strangeness of government regulation.
Here in Mississippi they had anti-litter billboards a few years back that had a Highway Patolman saying "I ain't your mamma!" (pick up your litter). That is how I feel about government. Yes, they should not be looking at my dinner plate.
Oh, yeah! I remember those billboards! Where in Mississippi do you live, KathysCC? I am in Columbus, MS-northeast part of the state.
Also, on the smoking, I am glad of all of the bans they are putting out on smoking in public. I cannot stand the smell and hate to go around it. My in-laws smoked for years, then quit after I had my first child, then eventually they went back to it again. I had another child and they quit for good after that one. I always hated to go to the house because of the smell. I have heard lots of stories on the second-head smoke. They say it is worse than the "first-hand" smoke. If someone's spouse smoked and had to breathe it in day in and day out and can see why it can be bad. Once the smell is in, it will not come out. ![]()
