I just had a friend start up my website. Not all the information is accurate she put it in to fill a space. Please let me know what you think.
www.heavenscentcake.com
Thanks
I have a pretty powerful computer with broadband internet connection and it is loading slow for me. When I clicked on the different cake galleries it took me to an email link. But, maybe your cakes aren't loaded yet??
While using firefox your logo/heading is hard to read and doesn't stand out since it's the same color as the background. I switched to IE and it was much better. Also I was curious as to why some words are capped and others aren't in your slogan?
All in all it looks pretty good though. Looks like you have a good foundation and it's easy to navigate.
Thanks for the tips. I will check into having her change the name color so it stands out more. I do not have any pictures loaded yet. This is just what she worked on today. I did not have any input on the wording yet she did that on her own. I think she was looking around at other sites & this is what she had come up with thus far. Let me know if you can think of anything else. Thanks again I am just so excited it's actually up!
i think you have a great start. now i hope i don't offend with this comment, its not my intention! but the little circles that have your different gallery names in them? (wedding cakes, grooms cakes, birthday cakes, etc) i think they look tacky. i would just have the words, no goofy circles around them. it will look a lot more high end and professional, imho. (again, im not trying to be rude at all, just helpful!)
also on the flavors page, under the premium cake and icing flavors you have an * before every word. its too much and looks cluttered. you have already listed "additional cost" under the list, that should be enough.
also, im assuming the pics on your homepage are temporary space holders? i would take down the one with the bride, it looks very pixelated (ie unprofessional). i guess if you're not sending any clients there yet it doesn't matter, but if you're sending people to the website you don't want them to be greeted with a grainy photo that looks like it was scanned out of a magazine.
great start! i hope what i said wasn't hurtful at all! its just my opinion and others may disagree with me.
Heavenscent,
Your colors are really nice and I like the front page photos!
You have a few grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the site. I'm off to bed, so I can't mention them all.
Here are a few:
"Melissa Stehman, owner and cake designer specializes " You need a comma after the word "designer"
"A minimum of 2 weeks notice is recommended to order a custom cake. Please contact us for " This sentence has no proper ending.
You have asterisks after premium cakes and fillings (and you're also missing commas here). Did you mean to follow that with a "* requires extra charge?"
"We deliver within the greater Dallas Area. A $25.00 delivery fee applies to all deliveries within " This sentence has no proper ending.
Can't wait to see the photos...this is exciting! Congratulations!
Hmmm....the picture of the bride looks great on my computer
Wonder why you're seeing a grainy, bad pixel kind of image.
The page does load slowly (I'm on the highest speed cable), so maybe that's it?
thanks guys I knew I could count on you. Please don't feel like you need to sugar coat this is a learning experience for me. Everything she has on here has just been cranked out in 1 day during her slow time at work. However I will be sure to address all concerns. I am just thrilled to be up & running I just meet her a week ago & all she is charging me is a cake here & there. continue to let me know your feedback thanks again
I have also just had a look at your website and the photo of the bride is all "grainy"
Also tried to go into the different categories, wedding baby shower etc. and it took me to an email address.
But otherwise, your site looks good!!
I think you're off to a wonderful start! There are a few glitches, but as you mentioned previously, this is just an initial load.....so congrats! I love the colors you're used throughout...and I LOVE the ovals around the different cake types in your gallery! I guess it just boils down to what you like....not everyone can like the same thing....so just make it YOU!
Oh, I also have a powerful computer and high-speed connection with wireless router....your site loaded very quickly or me and no graininess anywhere!
Please keep us posted as more info is added/tweaked!
i would so far as to suggest that those of you who can't see the pixelation in the photo simply don't know what to look for. but take a close look at the pic of hte cake on the left (homepage) and then at the bride on the right. the cake pic is excellent vs the bride photo, which is very poor quality. i would bet a lot of money that its a scanned image of a printed photo that has been blown up far too large for what it can handle. it has nothing to do with your home computer or software or any gadgets. simply making the photo smaller would likely eliminate the problem.
but i must also admit, i've spent hours and hours over several months researching websites and comparing the quality ones to the tacky ones. when putting mine together i always had the thought in the back of my mind : would i find this on vera wangs website? on tiffany's? on ritanis? on tag heurs? if the answer was no, then i didn't want it on mine. how you present yourself and your business goes a long way in the type of customers you attract.

I completely agree with you! It's important toask yourself those questions when designing your site! Good advice! As far as pixilation, I still see none on my pc....looks like I took the picture myself and loaded it! The "guts" of your computer can absolutely impact what and how you view images through explorer. It's still good advice, as if I load a "scanned" image I may see it very clear, but others see a grainy picture! I'm an ameature photographer with a semi-professional D-series Nikon and am very familiar with pixilation....which is only scratches the surface of a good image! Good advice beccakelly!
I think this is a great start. I can't wait to see the photos. My website has been up and running for about 6 months and I haven't fixed anything. It's very time consuming, especially when you have a ton of cakes to make. My husband who does web design is making me learn how to do it lol. So instead of it taking him an hr, it has taken me months to get a few pictures on there. He is a teacher and he means well, but my site is suffering. Maybe you will have better luck with your friend.
A few things...
1 I know what pixelation is and the picture of the bride has none on my computer.
2 I'm running a very fast laptop with high speed cable and wireless connect that is at it's highest peak and your site seems to run a little slow, the picture place holders that appear before the pictures download are a pain but I think that is a setting on MY computer not your site. But it does show me that you have double layer pictures here and there in the top frame and that causes slow downs.
I personally don't think there is any need in compairing yourself to Vera Wang or the like because you aren't them and I'm sure none of those up there people actually designed their own website.
I've designed many websites in the past 7 years and they all range in different directions as far as decorations and how they are laid out and colors and such. I think your colors are good and I like the two pictures placed on the front although I think the bride picture should be replaced with a professional photo of one of your couples cutting the cake you made for them... Unless of course this is a photo of you or a family member and has some special significance to you.
I understand someone else is building the site for you, which is fine, but she/he needs to understand there is something out there called spell check and grammer check and she needs to use it for a professional looking site. One tip I can offer for that, when I'm adding information to my website I do a rough draft of it in Word and it automatically corrects or at the very least tells me a word is misspelled or punctuation is needed/missing, or that I need to reconsider a sentence because it doesn't make sense...
I think it's a good start but I would also ask her to remove the emailto link that is connected to your gallery "folders" because it's very annoying to have outlook opening up when you don't use it and it isn't installed lol... she could just leave them with broken links or unfinished links or remove the links all together and just leave the image there for placement purposes.
Also there is something going on with it that it really slows things down in the background... I didn't have any lagging or any problems until I opened your website up and now that it's all loaded up my computer is lagging really bad... not sure what it could be maybe too much coding or something too many scripts running at once.. not sure.
I hope I didn't offend you or hurt your feelings with any of this it was not my intention. It's a great start to what will be a wonderful website! ![]()

i didn't say the OP should do that, i said I did to try and give some perspective on why i think the circles are tacky. and no those people certainly did not design their own websites. but neither did i. i had a professional do mine just like they had professionals do theirs, because i wanted my website to look incredibly sophisticated, high end, and professional.

It's not pixelated at all if you look at it in internet explorer, it's grainy if you look at it in firefox.
