You did a great job. It looks like Martha's. It sounds like your friend is a little jealous.. Sometimes we can not pick what people will order, and as long as the bride was happy, you should be too. Pat yourself on the back. ![]()
Honestly I really like it. I think it is much nicer than Martha's. I really like the colors you used. I think you did a fabulous job. and I am sure your bride was thrilled.
Do you have a friend jealous of your talent or something?? ![]()
Oh no!! I didn't see that! Woops! I guess even the best of us mess up from time to time huh! ![]()
I must agree w/every9one else. You did a great job on this.......unless there is something way wrong that didn't show in the pic.
Like most of the others, this is not one of my favorite cake designs but from what shows in the pic you did a very, very nice job on it.
Your cake is NOT ugly. You did a mighty fine job on that cake. And if I can put my 2 cents in, that's not what I would call a friend. If she did not like it then O.K. everybody does not like everyone else's cake, but to say it is ugly, she needs glasses or something. This cake is not ugly and don't let her make you question your decorating skills. You did good.
Hey Emily
You really are my neighbour, same town.. you had the same Wilton instructer that I did... and I think you did a great job.
Congrats.. you're doing a wonderful job and you will keep getting orders with your talent... Keep up the good work.

She's crazier than a loon!! I'm betting, since you took the class together, that there might be a touch of jealousy. It could honestly just not her style or taste, but that doesnt' make it "ugly".
Proudly put this one in your Portfolio!!
Ditto... what a shame the green-eyed monster reared it's ugly head!
I just talked to another friend who was at the reception (she recommended me to the bride) and she told me that the couple absolutely loved the cake!! Yay! As long as they're happy, I'm happy!
idoweddingcookies---who was your instructor??
I'm from the coast too

Let me just say, I really like your cake! I think the colors are nice, the leaves are well done and the whole thing looks really professional. For the sake of argument, though, maybe you misunderstood your friend. When you clarified and said her words were that you "did a pretty good job considering what an ugly cake it was", it sounded like maybe she meant you did a good job with a design that she thinks is ugly. Meaning that she was really insulting the original Martha Stewart cake. Granted it was still an uncouth, thoughtless thing to say, but maybe she didn't mean it the way you thought. Just an idea to maybe make you feel better!
Maybe she is jealous of your work and she certainly should not have said to you what she said without clarification, however, maybe she was saying the "design" is ugly, not your decorating skills-- which are obviously of high quality! Personally I like the design. My entire downstairs is decorated in antique Italian grape theme and your cake would be stunning as a centerpiece!!! ![]()
I think your cake is beautiful. Mabye adding a little more height with the grapes would be nice. But really beautiful as is.
Okay, read the first page, and have read enough.
Your "friend" is not a friend, she's a semi-pleasant acquaintance who (like my good friend Indydebi said) is jealous of your talents.
Your cake, while not everyone's taste in style, is very, VERY nicely done. I like the sparkle and shine you got on the leaves. It is a very effective technique.
Since you asked for suggestions on what you could have done differently, I agree with the suggestion to dry the leaves with some "movement". I like to use old styrofoam egg cartons that I've washed well. You can use them with the points up or down so that your leaves next time will have some curvature to them. You can gently roll the edges in a little bit, too. Just go outside some time and take a look at leaves you find on the ground; they're not perfectly flat, so for a more natural-looking effect, try to emulate that.
Other than that, I think your cake is very lovely and you are well on your way to being GREAT!
Keep on Baking,

Your cake is every bit as beautiful as Martha's. Whether or not anyone else likes it is simply a matter of taste. And the only one that matters is the bride and she obviously loved it.
You should be very proud of it.
My instructor's name is Tina... she is such a sweetheart.
i think you did a great job and did what the bride and groom wanted. hopefully it was a comment that came out of her mouth before she had a chance to speak. would i want it as a wedding cake? maybe not, but as a cake in general i think it's beautiful. your work is beautiful and the leaves and grapes look wonderful. so, don't stress, i'm sure we've all made some cakes that weren't everybody's taste. ![]()
I haven't read through the whole thread, but I agree with the ones I did read -- your cake is beautiful and your friend is probably jealous. I love the leaves and the grapes are what the bride wanted -- you can't help that!
I have two people in my life who sound a lot like this "friend." Both of them have had a couple of cake classes and the little green jealousy monster constantly rears his ugly head!!

I have to agree with eatsleepdreamcake
The Green-Eyed Monster rears it's ugly head, opens it's nasty mouth and said your cake was ugly--jealousy plain and simple. The Bride's design is not my taste, but your execution is beautiful. Keep up the great work!
it is what the bride ordered. everyone has different taste. i personally do not like the colors, but you did a great job. i wish i could do it half as good. your friend has every right to be jealous.
EmilyGrace, I actually commented on your cake over the weekend, I thought it was so pretty and different! I think she might be jealous, I can't imagine what part of the cake she could possibly think was ugly!
Your friend is nuts......get it? NUTS.....?? LOL It's a beautiful cake!! You did a great job!
