I am in a bit of a pickle all and I need HELP!

I've had a lady on the phone enquiring about a wedding cake for her daughter. The things is, the bride does not like cake, she likes donuts and wants a cake made out of donuts. icon_eek.gif

I have no idea where to start from, I said I'd look into it and get back to her. Anyone have an idea? Have you come across a donut cake before? Said I'd revert to her tomorrow if I had anything.

The last one I saw was just a couple of towers of donuts stacked on raised plates, sort in the shape of a tiered cake. You can add decorations like gumpaste or fondant.

I think you may have to have more than one donut per person, unless you have someone serve. One advantage, no cutting, just tongs.

Sounds like a challenge. Maybe you can use doughnuts and doughnut holes. OR how about cakeballs?

Here's an image a donut cake (you have to scroll down a little):

I have seen a wedding cake made of donut holes and put into the form of a croquembuche. Very nice it looked, too.

Bless you rezzycakes. That's exactly what I was looking for. Donuts covered in white glaze would look really cool like that.

Hi, I went to a wedding about a year ago and they also did the whole doughnut cake thing... what they did was (Krispy Kreme) 2 glazed doughnuts (bride and grooms fav), one on top of each other with some filling in between them and drizzled with white icing with royal icing flowers, daisies. So they were individual cakes, 2 doughnuts per person.... VERY YUMMY! The presentation was beautiful, very very elegant, they really dressed up the doughnuts! Wish I had a picture to share!

I would be inclined to use krispy creme donuts/// I make fresh donuts but as far as I am concerned donuts need to be eaten warm and FRESH/////they are not something that can sit around//// whereas crispy cremes although I do not like the after taste have an amazing texture impossible to achieve with out overdoing preservatives ( stay fresh). Good luck what a challenge

Gabby, that sounds like a very original idea. I just might borrow that.

Everyone, I really appreciate your help and I can rest easy knowing that I have something to tell the lady tomorrow...

I do not know where you live, but the best donut shop in town will make special orders for you, at the time you need them, as long as it isn't some ridiculous order like 20 dozen for 9 PM. And if you are a business, they offer a discount for larger orders.

I would have to order an extra dozen, because I would be standing there, eating them while assembling the cake!

Hi tporbz, You are welcome!! Really, good luck with this challenge, like someone already said, doughnuts are best when eaten fresh so you might have to assamble the cake/cakes right before the event. Oh, BTW, don't give out ALL your ideas to this lady, as all this ideas might be easily reproduced and she might think she can do it herself. icon_confused.gif HTH!!

I would imagine that you'd have something like this over in the US, Donut King in Melbourne (Australia) makes donut birthday cakes, they make you huge donuts which are about 10-12 inches in diameter, and they taste just like a regular donut. One year for my nephew's birthday we got him one shaped like a number.
Maybe you can get large rounds and stack them like a wedding cake.
Just an idea, still single donuts make it easier as there's no cutting

I live in the UK, and had never heard of donut cakes until this evening. Nati, I don't know of anyone who bakes donuts that large, but if I get the 'job', I suppose it's something I could investigate. Thanx

Nati, we haven't got Dunkin' donuts in the UK as far as I know, but I'll have a look round and see what I can come up with.

hi, I'm new here, but I used to work at krispy kreme and we had a lady that wanted her wedding cake made out of doughnuts. So what we did is that night before the wedding (open 24hrs) we made raspberry filled powdered doughnuts and sent em out in the delivery truck to where the wedding was and they had someone there to set it up. they just did 3 tiered bases and some ribbons on the top was the bride and groom it was nice. Also today I saw a place on tv that made huuuuge donuts, they rolled the dough out on the counter and used a bucket to cut out the donut and a bowl or something to cut out the hole, then they fried it in a big fryer and used chopsticks to keep it uniform and to flip it. I dunno if it helps but maybe it can give you an idea?

could you may be look for an oil to add that is donut flavored to a cake. There is a place around me that makes regular cakes that taste just like a glazed donut (so my aunt says---and she is trustworthy) The only way I can figure out how they do it is to possibly add lorain oil to the cake batter, just a thought.

I can't give you any info, but I just wanted to say how cool I think this is!! I wish I had thought of it for my wedding 2 years ago. I am allergic to cakes so we had rice krispie cakes. They looked cool, but were hard as a rock!
