Making Cakes Is Not Gonna Make Me A Millionaire!

I dont think Im ever going to be rich with this cake decorating lark!
I have to do a trail cake everytime so there goes any profit I was going to make from this cake! This is the trail run so I am looking for your Expertise!
My brief was a sailboat (no motor). Its for Georgies husband who has a yacht and loves t sail. (his initials are RH) I might live in a country surrounded by water but I know nothing about sailing! Would appreciate any feedback on this, and any ideas of what I have missed or must include on a sailboat cake???
I think this has been the most difficult cake design & construction wise I have attempted.
Thanks
Kathryn
I don't know anything about sailing, but I do know a thing or two about cakes. And that is a fabulous cake! It doesn't look like you have to do a practice cake before the real one anymore. ![]()
It looks wonderful! I don't know a thing about sailing either, so I can't help you on the boat details, but is there any way you can save the figure? And maybe the sail and lifesaver? That would save you some time and materials for the "real" cake.
love it have not gotten that brave yet. the cake i'm working on is going to be a 1/2 sheet .decorated with some dolphins jumping in the water. and (made my first fontant person) going to have him nealing like he just wrote happy birthday in the sand. i'm just crossing my fingers it will come out as i got it planed.
Hi fellow Kiwi.
You did a great job. No need for you to do a trial cake. Yes I would agree with you, we won't be millionaires from decorating cakes. When ever I get a subject for a cake I always do a search on google for images to get ideas and always save the images to My Pictures so I can refer to them from time to time. Good to see the sunbathing beauty is sun smart. Keep up the good work.
Kath, i think you need to have more confidence in yourself and forget about the practice cakes [and make more $$$$
]. By all means, make things ahead of time, like for this cake, you could have made the girl and sail ahead of time. Your cakes are so good, and ALL your practice cakes dont seem to be practice at all, they're great!!!
I love this one, really great work

This is wonderful! I wouldn't change a thing.
Awesome cake! Love all the details! Shark fin slicing the water is a great touch! I'd say your trial run cakes are a thing of the past!! Hope you are charging a fair price for your incredible cakes!!
Can you save this to throw on top of the sheetcake "ocean"??
That's a great idea! I wonder how far away she needs it? If it's too far away - I like the idea of saving any of the individual pieces that she can.
It really is a wonderful cake!
That is ADORable. My dad lives on a sailboat, but I'd say you have the basics down to get the idea across for sure.
Too bad you can't just freeze the whole thing well and defrost it for the final cake--it's just about perfect as is.
Yes, I think you do get over the nerves. My last few cakes, I noticed that I wasn't having that "shaking-hands-knot-in-my-stomach", I was just...enjoying myself, which was a nice change! ![]()
Beautiful job! ![]()
Well of course I went a GLUED everything to the boat didn't I ![]()

Never mind, she wants it for the 29th Nov so I have time to redo. This is a big month for cakes for my as my niece is turning one and my son has his 6th birthday the day after this cake is due.
No doubt you will see me stressing in the forum at some stage ![]()
, thanks so much for your support
Thanks MissRobin but I can't take credit, I learnt from Aine2...... here is the link to her slideshow on how to make a face.
Have fun with it ![]()

I don't know how any of you have time to make these trial cakes and what do you do with them afterwards? WOW! Great cake!
