This was my first time making the starburst rose, made for a friend's birthday cake next week. I had one HECK of a time softening them up, even after 10 seconds in the microwave. I bought these at a bulk food store, so maybe they were stale. Any comments or critiques would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Thanks alot, everyone! I was unable to form individual petals that looked halfway decent. I softened the candies and rolled them out like fondant and cut with the gumpaste petal cutter and formed them . I could NEVER do a tutorial on these, but I sure wish someone that knows what they are doing would do so. LOL Would make it so much easier to actually see it done. Thanks again for your kind words. icon_smile.gif

I made tootsie roll and starburst roses...the exact same way you would with fondant.

For the tootsie roll roses, i do it all by hand. Break of a piece....knead it until its soft, and form it from individual petals attached to the base.

For the starburst roses..u could do it all by hand but it takes WAY too long and too much time (besides the fact that your hand kills after a few)

SO I put them in the microwave for about 5- seconds...you dont want to do it too long or it will get runny and be WAY too hot to work with - hot enough to burn you easily.

If you put it in just right, it will be the consistency of play-doh and very easy to work with.

you will find that the starburst will get rock hard as it cools down (it doent make any difference if it is sealed air-tight or not) so just pop it right back into the microwave and repeat as needed.

It doesnt matter how many times you heat and re-heat - it will still be good.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. ill see about getting up pictures of my roses ive done right now.
