Did anyone else see the Unwrapped episode that just aired about TX foods??

They had a spot on the Texas Longhorn cake done by someone named Janette in TX. It was a really cool looking cake, but I couldn't help but notice that the story seemed to take place in her home kitchen icon_confused.gif when there was mention on the show that she had a shop? icon_surprised.gif

Did anyone else catch that?!

Yeah we just happend to catch it, since it was talking about places in tx, and since we are in tx, we wanted to watch. I was mad icon_mad.gif when the show was over that they would even do a segment on someone that was clearly doing it out of her home and shouldn't be.

I've seen them do that a lot. I remember one show about a woman who was starting a cheesecake biz. The jist of the story was how someone fell in love with her cakes and baled her out of the financial mess she was in and became partners with her (she could bake .... but she was not a business woman).

Anyway .... they showed her in her little New York apartment with cheesecakes stacked on her tables, on all of her counters, on her couch, on the back of her couch, on the chairs and the arms of the chairs! Hubby and I were watching with our mouth dropped open! We couldn't believe this was being shown.

Does TX not allow legal home based cake businesses?

Oh that's so frustrating! Especially when it isn't even legal! I remember seeing a show on Kate Sullivan decorating cakes in her NY apartment and she had a baby on her back! I'm sure the Health Dept. loved that one!

Sometimes I wonder if they do the segments for the show in the house of the baker so as not to take up too much room (cameras and crew) at the bakery and possibly lose business. Maybe that's not where they bake all the time, but just tape the show there. Especially since it was mentioned that a shop is owned by the baker. I don't think everyone is as lucky as Duff to have such a large space.

Just an idea.

Nah, often cooking shows or shows devoted to food would like to film segments in a home kitchen or a kitchen that looks more "homestyle" in order for the viewer to connect and think that they can do that style of cooking as well if they put their minds to it.

I have no doubt that the cooks featured in those shows do have store fronts or professional, licenced kitchens, but do the segments at home just to look good on TV. It's a trick one learns early in film school icon_razz.gif

Unwarpped is all about Caffeine here tonight does that fit, it will start in a few hours if that's it I will tape it and check it out.

I do agree with CeeTee, I think Food network probably wants us to associate with the bakers that is why they place them in such homy kitchens.

I wish my kitchen looked like theirs....

Good Luck!

mpaigew- No-Texas does not allow the operation of a home based food business. If you want to establish one you can, but there are so many rules about it being seperate from your own kitchen, not have any doors that adjoin to a living quarters, etc. I've checked. ...and I was bummed. icon_sad.gif

I would have agreed with you totally, but I looked her up on the internet and there is no location of a shop on her website.... so I emailed her asking where it was and she said she would have to meet me somewhere. So who knows... good thing for her I'm not trying to open up a legit shop in the austin area. icon_cool.gif

So nobody knows for sure if she has a shop?
