All I can say is Thank Goodness the customer is a neighbor and my dd plays with her ds all the time.

The neighbor called last week with a last-minute order for her dh's birthday. I made an 8" Bittersweet chocolate cake, 2 tortes, filled with pb filling. Iced in whipped chocolate ganache and topped with chocolate glaze and Reeses pb cups. Not my best job, but she knows I'm just starting out. I charged her $40.

So she comes to the door, and dd (she's 5 yo) comes running with "I'll get your cake!" icon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gif And before I can rush to stop her, she tries to pick up the cake box...which is a 10" box...sitting on top of a cake pedastal...which started to tip over.

I saved the cake thankfully. The side decorations were a little smushed, but the neighbor didn't seem to mind. She said it looked fabulous, wouldn't take a discount, and went home with the cake.

My lovely dd and I had a nice chat afterwards, reminding her that while I LOVE her help in the kitchen and when we decorate cakes for fun, she doesn't need to be in charge of carrying cakes when people come to pick them up. Even if we know them.

I have a 3 yr old and she tries to help all of the time. I am glad you were able to save the cake. I was not able to save one of mine. She took a chunck out of it to see how it tasted. All I could do was cry.

She's done that in her younger years. Fingerprints in cakes, smushed flowers "just to see if they were the hard ones or soft ones"...my ds is 7, so we've had plenty of incidents.

I typically forstall the "tasting" by giving the kids the tops I slice off to level the cakes. That seems to stall them for the evening icon_smile.gif.

icon_eek.gif Yikes! That was a close call!

I am pretty anal about my kids being allowed near my baking & whatnot! lol
I have 5 children (8-16 yo) and they need to stay out of my way when I am 'working'...after the cake is done..hands off! My hubby is beginning to wish I could afford to build a second kitchen so it'll be 'my space' for baking ...me too! That would be a dream come true! icon_biggrin.gif

My friend's mother once had a cake on the dining table. One of her little grand-daughters was desperate for a piece but had been told to keep her hands off it, it was for dinner. Well, you know how literal a three year old can be when they choose. They found her, half an hour later, kneeling on the table, hands behind her back, face in the cake. She said, "But I kept my hands off it!!"

Kids, bless 'em.

Natalie.

Thanks Jeanne icon_smile.gif. She is really cute, and she really was trying to be a helper on this one.

Here's my dd - she turned 5 yo last week.

My daughter always wants to try and help...I usually give her the tops from being leveled off as well. Although, she is picking up on learning to do some gumpaste flowers. She's 11 (going on 16)

Hey, thanks! Tubbs is a character from a British TV show that my husband and I love. When I was thinking of a screen name, this jumped into my mind. Tubbs is also my dog's middle name (Flossie Tubbs Wallace)! Read all about her (him) here:

Sounds like my son. He loves to help me with the cakes.

While I was 8mo pregnant and bigger than a beached whale, I baked a scooby doo cake for him (he was going to be 3 at the time). When I woke up the next morning and rolled out of bed to go ice the cake, I found my husband and mother cracking up in the kitchen. Apparently my son grabbed a chunk of the cake and was in the pantry hiding and eating it, leaving behind him a nice trail of crumbs.

Gotta love them icon_biggrin.gif

Yep, for the last four or five months or so I have had to put my youngest (she'll be two on Sept. 6th) in the living room and close the gate as to block her entrance into the kitchen. I've caught her twice just when I was getting my icing ready to decorate two different cakes, on two different days, reaching up on her tip toes and taking little tiny chunks out of the cake and eating it.

Every time she sees a cake or cookie on TV or in a book/magazine, I cringe because for the next two hours all I hear is "Cake, Mommy. Cookie, Mommy!" And she runs to the kitchen and waits for me to get her one (90% of the time she doesn't get one!). She even ran to her room crying the other day (learned that one from her older brother who is 10!!) when I said no and tried to give her a fruit cup. She's also bad with pizza, but not AS bad. lol

When my kids were little, I would keep them out of the kitchen with an expandable baby gate. (we have an open floor plan, no walls (or doors) between the kitchen, dining and living rooms) Then when the cake was done I would store it in the microwave oven so they couldn't reach it.

My little girl (20 months) loves to help also! When we are doing freebies for family or practicing I put her on the counter and let her stir or add ingredients. However, I have to watch her because she has been known to throw the entire sugar canister into the mixing bowl.

I really get a kick out of letting her help cook. I can tell she feels like a "big girl" and is always proud of her completed project!

I love her sooo much. I can't wait to get off work so she and I can work together on our family cookout project for Labor day!

My mother must have trained my brothers and I well about not touching cakes. During a college vacation we were all home, and Mom had made a cake and left it on the table. We all drooled over it but figured she was taking it somewhere, so we didn't touch it. On the second day, Mom finally asked what was wrong with the cake since no one had bothered even tasting it. Needless to say it didn't last long after that.
