I am so upset!!! icon_cry.gif both of my 12x18's aren't soaked good inside icon_surprised.gificon_cry.gif . I tested them with my serrated knife in several different spots and both came out clean...not a crumb on the knife. I always leave my cakes in for an additional five minutes after testing just to be sure.

When I leveled the first one, I discovered that it wasn't right in several spots. Did the second one and the same thing, soft spots. Now I have to go to the store for more cake mix icon_cry.gif

This cake is for my sister's surprise b/d party on Sunday. I am leaving early in the morning to spend the weekend with her. Grace (my sister) is turning the big 60 on the 19th so, I want this to be a special cake for her.

Also, the flowers that I made on Monday for the cake is still not completely dry...the heat here is terrible so I will have to use artificial flowers...again, a disappointment icon_rolleyes.gif

Okay, I'm feeling a little better after spilling my guts to you guys and shedding a few tears icon_smile.gif

Oh, by the way, forgot to mention that my butter cream icing turned into mushy icing and taste a little powdery...nothing is going right for me with this cake...oh well, off to the store icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks for letting me rant thumbs_up.gif

Oh wow! I am so sorry bad things are happening! I can't believe all of that is going wrong at the same time! I have had it happen to me too!

Do you have an oven thermometer to check if you have even temp in your oven? Maybe add a flower nail or two as well to distribute the heat in your cake.

I hope things go better for you! I know it's the heat that's the culprit! icon_mad.gif

I am sure she will love! have fun when you go see her!

Oh goodness I am so sorry to hear about your day. I sometimes think that certain cakes I am making are cursed from the start or something as I have had cakes that just right from the get go didn't want to be my friend.
I agree with Step I also have little doubt that the heat is the culprit.
I wish you the best of luck with your next batch. thumbs_up.gif

I'm sending you a "hug" and wishing you the best when you bake the new cakes. I've had days like that and boy, they do stress you! I had an evening full of "oh my goodnesses" last night doing my daughters topsy turvy cake (in my pictures). I'm sure the heat is causing you your trouble. I've had that problem here too! Take care, keep smiling and know that your sister will love what you do for her no matter what!

Sorry you are having such a hard time. Unfortunately, I have no advice since I never have made such a gigantic cake. Chin up, hang in there. We know you can do it!! icon_smile.gif

...discovered that it wasn't right in several spots. Did the second one and the same thing, soft spots...

Not sure what you are calling 'soft spots' but I bet if you had put those cakes into plastic and let them sit for a few hours they would have been fine.
The moisture is 're-absorbed' and spread thru the whole cake when it sits well covered.
If the 'spots' were totally *UNcooked* batter, then yes, you have a problem....with your oven.

I had the same problem awhile back, just cut the holes out and fill them with icing or pudding. I made 4 cakes before crying uncle. I did the pudding trick on one and cut the rest up and made smaller cakes.

LOL I meant cut the soft spots out and fill the holes with pudding or icing. Once it is iced you can't tell the diffrence.

...and the sega continues icon_eek.gif

Went to Food Lion and they only had two boxes of Betty Crocker yellow on the shelf (on sale)...okay, ask the cashier if they had any more in the back and of course, when she came back they didn't...second store here I come icon_cry.gif

Okay, finished my shopping, got to the counter and of course...no checks!!! I had some starter checks that the bank gave me until my reorder comes in and you know stores do not take starters icon_rolleyes.gif . Thankfully, they know me and excepted my check with some extra cash written in icon_biggrin.gif .

Finally, I get home...cake in the oven. Proceeded to make the two oval cakes and what...NO EGGS icon_cry.gif Back to the store again icon_cry.gif

People, I'm about ready to pull my hair out icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_lol.gif

icon_redface.gificon_redface.gif Forgot to thank you all for your support. Yep, I use the nails for baking...even the small cakes icon_smile.gif
