Need suggestions on how to/what to make this sign to put on a cake. I am after something simple that my 8 year old can do. I bought a container of gumpaste today...but don't know how to use it yet. I am only familiar with buttercream...but need something that will make it last through the state fair competition (also must transport easily).
The cake will be a 1/2 sheet cake so the sign will also be a little bigger than it may post on here. Also...what size should I make the sign?
Ideas?
Gumpaste works just like clay, only it dries very quickly. It will work great for the sign. Just keep it covered with a DAMP (NOT WET) cloth while you are working on it to keep it from drying.
Let it dry on some parchment paper and you'll be all set to paint it, or pipe royal icing on it or decorate it however you want!

YOu can make it out of gumpaste if you want it edible or find someone on here that can do an edible image on their printer using edible ink.
If you choose to use the gumpaste then what you need to do is make a template first. Use a piece of paper and cut it to the size you want your sign. Then you want to pull out a ball of gumpaste probably about the size of a golf ball or larger depending how big you want your sign. Then your going to knead it in your hands for a while to activate the gums in it. If its a little hard you can dab a bit of Crisco in it. The you roll it out like you would with fondant. I would suggest dabbing a bit of crisco on your rolling surface as well. Then using a pizza cutter, cut your sign using your template.
You can use edible markers to paint it or use dusts with lemon extract and a paint brush.
Hope this helps!
How can I get the exact design to transfer? I have no drawing skills at all...and I want it to be exactly like the sign. Is there a way to transfer using piping gel or something?

I think the edible image idea is the best if you don't have drawing skills. If you don't know anyone who can do this for you, call your local grocery stores that have in-house bakeries and see if they will print the image for you. It will probably cost you about 8-10 bucks but worth it if you're going for an exact replica.
I would do this using a frozen buttercream transfer (FBCT). I would make the whole sign, including the white background as the transfer. That way, you can pick the whole thing up and just place it on the cake. Even an 8 year old can do it! Though it does take some practice to make it come out looking really clean. If you don't know about FBCT, there's tutorials here on cc, or you can pm me and I'll help out any way I can.
The edible image is another super super easy way to go -- just doesn't require much skill, just a little knowhow about how to place it on the cake. You just go to a shop that can print it for you and then you place it on the cake when you're ready. It will be the exact sign.
Good luck! ![]()

Edible Image is probably the best way to go. You can somtimes get them printed at cake decorating store, just bring in the image and the size you want, not sure how much it migth be.
Also about the gumpaste. I used it to make small pieces on a few cakes and once the humidity got to them they flopped. I hope this would not be a problem for you.
So unless someone else can give you advice on how to avoid this. You might want to make a small sample and let it out in you weather to see what happens.
Good Luck
