Hi, I have a wedding cake next weekend, and wanted to see if you all could help me with something. It's a 3 tiered fondant covered cake, with hearts piped on with royal icing. The hearts have dust on them, and I was wondering what technique I should use. The hearts are navy blue, and my cake supply shop only had that color in petal dust. She said I would have to dust the hearts with petal dust, then go over with pearl luster. The question I have is.......After I pipe the hearts on the cake and wait for them to dry, do I just dust straight powder on the hearts, or make it a liquid with alchohol, or vanilla extract? Also if you just use straight powder, isn't that going to get all over my white cake? You guys are all great here and have helped me with so much. I appreciate it.

I would suggest a trial run, but I would use a liquid application to control where the color goes. I would mix color with alcohol, clear vanilla, or lemon extract (add liquid a drop at a time) then use a fine paint brush to apply the color.

Have you considered adding color to the royal icing?

I agree with JoAnnB. You should mix the dust with quick-evaporating liquid such as vodka. Why did your cake supply person suggest finishing with pearl dust? If you're looking for a pearlescent finish, just mix some pearl dust with the petal dust. No need to go over the hearts twice.

I am going to make the royal icing navy blue, but assumed I would still have to use navy blue petal dust, then go over with the pearl luster. Do you think I will only need to use the pearl luster, if I tint the royal icing blue?

If you're going to tint your icing blue, there's no reason to go over it again with blue dust. Now, when you go over the blue royal with your pearl dust+vodka, it may lighten the blue quite a bit. Experiment on a practice board before you do it on the cake. If it's too light, just mix some blue petal dust in with your pearl dust to keep the color dark.

Thank you so much for the advice. The girl at the supply store, works at the shop because it is a family business. She has just started doing cakes, and knows some stuff about cake decorating. I guess she was just assuming.
